I'm looking for a tool kit that is small enough to fit under the seat and contain various tools I might need. Anyone have anything they keep in their cab? I need to keep it hidden since I live in the Bay Area and crime is nuts.

I keep a small 1/4" drive socket set, winch recovery things, ratchet straps, tire plug kit and an air compressor.
On a trail I'll bring an impact wrench and sockets, vise grips, pliers, crescent wrench, and whatever else from the toolbox looks useful that day.

Interested to hear what I might be missing, I've never actually needed to do any trail repairs so haven't learned anything from experience.

Pieces of hoses and hose clamps. JB weld can fix a lot of stuff to get you home, zip ties. miscellaneous bolts/ hardware. I went to harbor freight and bought a 1/4 and 1/2 socket set and wrenches. The amount of tools you bring really depends on what kinda spares you keep. If you carry a spare axle have all the tools to change the axle. If you don't carry any spares some wrenches and a basic metric 3/8 socket set is plenty.

Assuming you have a single cab Prerunner OP? I have my cubby in the Xtra cab (back passenger side one, under the jump seat) loaded to the gills with most of the items mentioned above as well as a couple screwdrivers, a hammer, and a tire iron. That little cubby can hold a lot and is probably the most underrated aspect of the Xtra cab trucks.

I once managed to tighten my UCA long bolt with a tire iron and a crescent wrench on a trail. Was so happy I had those things buried in there.

I assume you're talking about a tool kit for working on the truck?

The best compact tool kit will be one you build yourself based on your needs. Anything you buy pre-assembled will have some tools you don't need and will be missing others you'll likely want.

I built one based on this list: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ckets-and-wrenches-for-1st-gen-tacoma.481748/

I didn't follow the list exactly. It was a tremendously helpful starting point (thanks @turbodb), but I deviated from it based on my own preferences and experience working on my truck.

I use the same tool kit when I work on the truck in my garage and when I go to the junkyard to pull parts. Using the tools and working on the truck in a controlled/non-emergency environment goes a long way toward making sure you have the right tools and knowledge to fix things in an emergency if needed.

I keep most of the tools in a roll, and then I keep the roll and whatever else doesn't fit in it in a soft tool bag. My favorite is the 15" Husky tool bag from Home Depot ($20, often on sale for $15) based on the size, color, and pocket arrangement. This whole setup can fit behind the seat of a standard cab.

My favorite tool in the entire kit is this adjustable pry bar from Matco. A bit spendy, but it's a joy to use and totally worth the money to me: https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/idexpb16a/16-indexing-extending-pry-bar

I have a tool roll that I keep in the cab. The roll allows me to keep just about everything I need to work on the Tacoma in one compact spot - easy to slide under the passenger seat. You can see a list of everything I keep in the roll, here:

Gear Roundup - Tool Roll Contents

In addition to the roll, you can scroll on that page to see the few other tools I carry in my OSK.
