So I'm strongly considering installing a super charger kit on my '09 dclb v6 to help pull my camper I take on regular excursions.

For those that have installed them, did you have any issues or "gotchas" when installing or after install? I do plan on installing it myself and not using a mechanic.

I know I do have to use premium gas. But I do that already on most fill ups. But please, EMPART THE KNOWLEDGE!

There's a supercharger thread, but I'll tell you from a techs perspective.

Buy a spare belt, they go through them faster than a standard belt. Also keep the routing attached to the spare belt. Further, put a new primary belt on while this is all off. It's a pain.

If you're thinking of doing any grill mods, do it while doing the SC install, you have it all apart and install a cooler.

Drain the coolant and use new coolant for the install. The supercharger uses the same super long life coolant as the engine.

The only thing I dont remember, is the spark plugs, I cant see anywhere in the install if you change them but I'm pretty sure they get upgraded.

man, after picking up a new car, my truck feels like it's going in slow motion. I might need to check that supercharger thread lol
The cost is tough for me right now though.

If my memory is right, Magnuson dropped the price by almost a grand since I looked last.

I see 6k. I don't think it's the right time for me. Mortgage and a car payment now. Home improvement projects...
OTT tune is on my list next time I get a chance to link up with them.

I was going to do the OTT as well, but I'd have to do it again after the sc install. So, I'll wait on that until after ;)

Just saying, atleast in florida @RCTuningFL, you can always update your OTT so there’s no need to wait! OTT is a good way to scratch the itch without breaking skin :)

Do it OP! You wont regret it! Its pretty much plug and play the instructions are very good. I had to drill one of the brackets for my clutch reservoir but other than that it was smooth . Also Id recommend getting a compact impact driver for removing the crank pulley - not a lot of room there….

Need to check with @JustDSM but I seem to recall something about that if you do a N/A tune then you can no longer flash the S/C tune due to the N/A tune updating the PCM to the latest calibration and the S/C tune being an older calibration. I'm not sure on this though.

Installation is pretty straight forward. Only issue I had was trying to get the crank pulley bolt off. I recommend getting the crank pulley holder tool to make it easier. Spare belt and keep it in the truck. The SC belt tensioners in these kits are known to break after a while. I already broke mine once. Read the SC tips and tricks thread then go back and read it again. Alot of good info in there.

If you plan on getting a supercharger in the future but want to get tuned now, please let your tuner know that. Future plans will influence what we suggest and route we go. We will try to use the same software now and later. While there will be an additional cost when stepping up to a supercharger, I apply as much of the initial cost as I can to your next tune so we can help keep the cost down. There is also a few other things I do to keep the cost down.

This is a good point, which I specifically point out in the HPTuners (Tacoma) FAQ.

Flashing a TSB update to a 2012+ Tacoma will update the Cal ID to one that is not eligible to receive the TRD S/C TSB/CUW Update. All of our N/A tuning for the 2012+ Tacoma will be done with the TSB update FYI.

If you plan on a Maggy/TRD Supercharger and getting tuned in the meantime while still naturally aspirated, you'll need to budget a replacement ECU into the equation or hold off until you get the S/C done. OTT and its retailers will, however, be happy to aid you in VIN matching your replacement ECU and applying the S/C calibration update to existing OTT customers, so we'll take care of you and feel it's important to keep members aware of the "gotchas."
