2nd Gen DIY Big Brake KIt -OEM parts- Part #'s provided (INSTALLED)

I apologize if this has been covered somewhere in the 23 pages, but I have a 2012 access cab with the 17" stock wheels... Wil these work with the upgrade listed in the first post?

I feel like I read out there that some 17s may not work, so I just wanted to check before I order everything.

I used GX470 calipers, and those will work with every Toyota 17” wheel combo.

 

I’m not sure if this question has been posed yet, but…what about 5th gen 4runner rotor/caliper, and dust shield? Arent they even bigger yet?

 

I just took a chance and ordered a caliper today it should arrive tomorrow.

I'll do a quick fitment test when I get the wheel off in the next day or so (I have the stock 17s on it now)

I think it will work but keep ya posted!

My other concern is the larger pistons may require more fluid to move.

 

5th Gen T4R Pistons are larger, which is why I chose the GX470 caliper because the Pistons are the same size as Tacoma.

 

Why wouldnt you want larger pistons?

I think this particular brake upgrade is specifically geared towards people who do not want larger pistons so that they don't have to deal with the additional fluid volume and the additional cost/effort of upgrading the booster. That's always been my take on the difference between the t4r versus Lexus upgrade.

no clue and no expertise to offer on the subject. There's lots of options for brake upgrades. I think there's another thread dedicated to the t4r upgrade and the larger calipers.

I dont believe you would have to do that. There are people that run the stock master/booster on a stoptech big brake kit….

personally, i’m looking forward to doing the 5th gen upgrade on my next brake job. It wasnt until i saw this thread that i started questioning which brake setup would actually be better

 

If you’re going to upsize your master cylinder, you can do any combo of brakes. Only reason I chose not to, is because the new MC has to be modified to work. The less shit I gotta do in the middle of nowhere, the better. With the 470 calipers, also found on 4th gen T4R, the pistons being the same size means my MC doesn’t have to push extra fluid for the same amount of braking.

 

There's a ton of guys on the 4runner forums that are upgrading for the extra +3mm and have no issues and are not changing the master cylinder at all.

I'll be giving it a try in the coming weeks and will post my thoughts

 

Hi all, I'm looking at doing the 13WL front brakes (NOT 13WH) on my 2nd gen truck. I'm sticking with 16in Baja wheels. They should fit; very tight though

I've just got 2 questions:
1) I want to replace my dust shields while I'm at it. Do I order 2nd gen Tacoma shields or 1st gen tundra?
2) What are you guys running for front brake hoses? Several people have mentioned sourcing them from Crown Performance. Should I replace the hardlines from the caliper to the spindle? If so, do I order hardlines for a 2nd gen Tacoma or 1st gen tundra?

1) you always order the shields that match the calipers, so you'd want the ones to go 13WL in your case.
2) I run the stock hoses that came with the truck.

Whenever I do a caliper swap (I've done it on 3 of my vehicles so far) I always have a spare hardline ready. You can get a straight one at a local auto store for about 5 bux. I've had only 1 hardline snap though, but I live in the rust belt. If you live somewhere that doesn't see much salt you probably don't need a hardline at all.

If you haven't done a swap before, make sure you do it on a day that auto stores are open. You never know when you have to make a quick run to the local hardware store to grab something (for a snapped hardline for example)

 

Just as a follow up, I went ahead with the 2014-2020 4 Runner calipers and associated rotors/pads.
These things are beasts! LOVE THEM! Best upgrade you can do to a 2nd Gen Tacoma IMO!

No issues at all and I used the stock MC.

Update for the sake of documentation:

Turns out stock Tacoma dust shields will work with the 13WL brakes. You have to trim the shields a bit with a Dremel. And you have to bend them inboard a little to clear the thicker rotor.
I got new hoses from Crown.

Everything went together very easily. Got the brakes bled and it took far more pedal travel to lock-up the wheels. But when they bite; they bite hard. I thought maybe we didn't get all the air out, so I took it a shop and had them bleed the whole system. The pedal feels marginally better, but it still takes much more pedal travel to stop than prior to this swap. Is this because the new calipers take more fluid to actuate? Does this mean I need a larger bore Master Cylinder?
