Doing my valve adjustment for the first time at ~166K. Intake valves were all in spec. Exhaust tight as expected, clearances were:

    #1 (Front 0.0060 Rear 0.0100)
    #2 (Front 0.0090 Rear 0.0070)
    #3 (Front 0.0070 Rear 0.0090)
    #4 (Front 0.0100 Rear 0.0080)

Opted to just pull the camshaft since every shim needed changing and as a kicker I can't find the Schley tool anywhere. I wound up only being able to re-use one shim :(

I think the motor looks pretty good for the mileage! New gaskets installed and mating surfaces cleaned, just waiting for shims to arrive.

I wished I had pulled the cam when I got to the cylinder at the back by the firewall. There is no room to work with the tool. You made the right decision.

I also made use of this tool, just have to be careful since it pushes off of the cam lobe. https://amzn.to/3wPwPJo

If you have the red clamper version of the tool it comes apart with the nut.

That way you can use the hook part and it doesn’t interfere with the rear of the engine.

I can’t seem to get my exhaust cam reinstalled. Seems like the scissor gear has rotated a bit even though I installed the service bolt. The cam journals won’t slide onto the bearings.

Do I need these teeth to line up perfectly? I don’t want to start torquing down the caps and break something.

For those wondering, you can just use a screwdriver to line the teeth back up. It dropped right in and the rest of the job went fine. Everything checked out in spec and the truck runs great now.
