Looking for some guidance before I start throwing parts at my truck or take it to the shop. My truck is a 1997 with a 2.7… coil ignition… Here’s what happened: I began the undertaking of adjusting my valve shims. I pulled and measured each shim and ordered the appropriate replacements from LCE. However, once I put everything back together my truck now will not idle and I have a misfire on every cylinder… I thought I potentially broke the water temp sensor in the back of the head… however I replaced that and it did not fix the problem… I’ve visually check all my vacuum lines and they are all in place, all connectors have been unplugged and plugged together again to ensure a clicking noise…

not sure what the problem could be and I’m now more confused after reading through all of the posts about misfires/rough idling… hoping for some guidance… thanks!

What else did you work on while in there? Just pull the valve cover and replace gasket, and a few shims? Cams never unbolted?

Did you clean the throttle body while in there? Some people gum up their IAC valve, Re-attach the ground?

Did you pull the exhaust cam?

Did you re-check clearances after installing new shims?

Did not pull the cam, all sensors are plugged in still… I haven’t installed the new shims yet either… I pulled the valve cover and measured all the shims to order new ones… the truck ran fine before I started this project too

And the truck ran well after the IAC was cleaned… it has 205,000 miles on it so I figured it was time to go through everything… I cleaned the throttle body and IAC at 200,000 miles… the shim adjustments were next up on my list…

Before I plowed back into it…I would do a leak down test first.

Check the PCV valve and then the plug firing order.

Firing order was checked and rechecked… I did a compression test at 200,000 and all cylinders were within 5psi of each other… I also checked all the grounds and plugs that i detached… I’m wondering is it possible I broke a wire in the engine wiring harness?? I was pretty careful moving it when I took the valve cover off…

Well, then old school diagnosis it is. Get her running and one by one take a plug wire off to see what cylinders are contributing.

Shims back in same order? Any crap between shims and buckets? When I reinstalled and rechecked clearances there was some metallic crap between the shim and bucket on #4 rear and I had no clearance. Cleaning all surfaces fixed it for me.

Plugs, coils, wires all correct? I’m less familiar with the older ignition style, my truck has coil packs.

Engine ground near rear passenger side of valve cover?
