I test drove, and the shift behavior feels great now in all gears as far as I tested, like the transmission is hardly there at all, no clunks, just instant easy shifting when it should. So unless I find otherwise soon, I think the problem is solved.

It appears so far that the broken solenoid was the culprit, and who knows, maybe one of the others had a small leak or blockage or whatever. All originals. I put in all new ones, new filter, cleaned the pan, magnets, mating surfaces, bolts and holes, added a little Lucas trans fix for prevention, and new fluid. I didn't bother trying to pull out the throttle cable.

Transmission success stories are good to hear, glad you found the issue.

Shoot, it did it again. Not fixed. It does shift better, but the particular problem is still there.

Still delayed shifting after all new solenoids ?
When the transmission is cold , the shifts are delayed to warm the transmission and engine quicker .
There will also be no converter lock up or 4th gear when the trans is cold .
If you are sure your cable is consistent now , tightening the cable will make shifting later but firmer . This is what you want rather than early lazy shifts . Lazy shifting creates slipping and extra heat .
in my link above , there is a pfd file at the bottom of the first post showing how to adjust pressure for the cable .
You connect a pressure gauge to the side of the transmission and adjust the cable according to the line pressure .

You have a lot of mileage on that critter and the pan was dirty ? Wondering if your pressure regulator is all worn out causing line pressure problems .
Its common on the A340 series transmissions . You would see this with a pressure gauge connected .

If a speed sensor is dropping out , you should be getting a code .
That being said , we have used a lab scope in the past to monitor speed sensors .
Sometimes the computer in the truck is not quick enough to catch the glitch .

    Yes, dirty pan and magnets.

Your previous posts links to a post that has 9 PDF files at the end of the first post. One is the A340 E repair manual which is 323 pages. I searched for "pressure" and found bits about line pressure and throttle pressure, but not how to test it.

I have read that the speed sensor is mounted outside and can be swapped out in minutes, so I think I'll try changing it. Is it possible for the speed sensor to get faulty at low speed only?

Honestly think you are waisting your cash on a big dollar speed sensor .
If the speed sensor didnt come up as a code , you may be spending cash for nothing .

What would I do if your truck was in my shop ?
We already know the bottom of the pan was full of junk when you had it off .
Thats a sign of worn out clutching that you cant put back unless you rebuild the transmission .

    Option # 1 Find a low mileage transmission .
Because your transmission is 2 wheel drive , not many guys are looking for a replacement .
There will be many to choose from with the throttle valve cable still installed .
If you are lucky , find a trans that was recently rebuilt

Option # 2 . Add a Sonnax valve body kit to your current transmission .
Hundreds of success stories here at Tacoma World .
Trick is to ctach it before things get worse .
I honestly think you may be past this point .

    Option # 3
Have your current transmission rebuilt .
A new seal kit , all new clutching , the Sonnax valve body kit and a fresh converter .
This option is by far the best if you plan to keep the truck , however it is also the most expensive .
Can you do this at home ?
Ofcourse . We can walk you through a transmission overhaul
That being said , you are going to be down for at least a week .
Some planning on your end needs to be done if this is your daily driver

Agree with gearcruncher the speed sensor doesn’t have a known high failure rate, but at a minimum you could remove it and check for shumtz on the end of it and clean it, thats all i got.

Fixed. It was just the worn out TV cable / line pressure cable that I guess wasn't applying line pressure smoothly enough. I pulled the transmission pan again and replaced the cable with the 4wd version of the cable that ended up looking the same despite Toyota saying it's incompatible. The outer sheath was noticeably in stiffer/newer condition which might be the trick.
