I guessed as much re tailgate shutting.

They'll fix it for that price.

So the bike is stable while transporting, it can’t fall out of the bed with the tailgate down, much cheaper than a bicycle rack, a bit more theft deterrent, and I know a lot of people that moto and MTB whom transport both the same way.

    .
I see. I have a long bed and put my bike lying down in the back with tailgate closed. If my bed is full of stuff or have more than one bike then I either use bike rack or tailgate pad. Dirt bike I always tie down or use hitch rack.

    :fistbump:
Long beds do make it easier laying a bike down in the bed for sure, though not the best way for transport.

You can close the tailgate with the MTB in the bed by kicking the back tire sideways a bit. A good body shop will have your truck fixed up right, nothing too complex on th repair. Only issue might be an accurate paint match since the truck iOS older.

I've piled bikes on their side before when moving quite a few, but I salvage them and (along with my neighbor) fix them or strip parts off. Ultimately, a working bike gets gifted to someone needy in the area or donated to charities who do the same.

For me personally I found it faster to just open the bed of my truck and place the bike in the back and close the tailgate. This has worked for me without issue. So far I have not had paint damage on the bike or had it fly out but I can see from others perspective where this could happen. Most of my friends with short beds use tailgate pad but you can turn the front wheel up at a sharp angle and make it fit in a short bed as well. When it comes to my dirt bike I do tie it down because it is so large and heavy. Plus if I lie it down on its side for long periods it leaks some fuel.

Well for me I already have tie downs in the tru k for my dirt bike. They work just the same on my 50 lb ebike. Just kick the back end over and shut the tailgate. No moving around or scratching plus it’s just easier

That’s unfortunate, insurance and inspections will need to clear the hurdles. Fingers crossed for ya.
