I sold the 1969 York to an 18-year old HVAC enthusiast and aspiring HVAC technician from North Jersey for $200! We met at the Promenade Shops in Center Valley, PA since it was roughly halfway for both of us. The buyer drives a 2017 VW Jetta that would not be up to the task of hauling a central A/C system, so he borrowed his dad's 2023 Subaru Forester, and surprisingly it fit...

    Sold it?
I would have paid someone to haul it off for me.
Obviously, I don't know any thing about HVAC.

York "Tombstone" units are highly sought after by collectors!

Never knew there was a "collector" market on old HVAC units.
    To each their own.

Got a serial on the air handler because the serial for the AC says '81? I'd bet the o/d unit got swapped because the date shown on the air handler does not correlate to the date code at all. Actually I'd bet that the AC was added later.

I don't mind being wrong, but I like to understand why lol.

Old stuff was all belt driven. In some ways it was nice, other ways it was terrible. When I started there was a healthy mix of the 2.

Well, the house was built with an oil forced air furnace in the basement. The central air was added in the attic later, so there were two different forced air systems. I'm thinking the central air was installed in 1969-1970, and the original unit died in the early 1980s. That 1977 Tappan that I scrapped had a Copeland compressor from 1986 in it.

I am still 99% sure that the 1980s York Tombstones were beige, though my friend's house had a 1981 York Champion "Tabletop" that was green, albeit a darker shade than the Tombstone that I sold...

This is the 1981 York Champion "Tabletop" at my friend's old house; I made the video over a decade ago. The unit was still there and operational when my friend sold the house in 2020, but the whole system was replaced when the new owner renovated the place...

This is a screenshot from another YouTube video (not mine) of some York Champion "Tombstone" A/C units like the one I just sold, but in the beige/tan color that I was talking about...

Beats me, sounds plausible. I just like a good mystery and this is now occupying too much of my mind to let it go lol.

We must get to the bottom of this York Tombstone mystery. I might even stop by the local York supplyhouse to get some more info haha.

Video of a claimed 1980 tombstone in aqua. I do wonder if the tan units were different versions. Carrier for example used to have different color units from their builder grade stuff to their normal line. I can't think of any other reason for there to be different colors, but I don't think it was a whole line switch, just model dependant.

Dude has lots of tombstone videos though.

As I said before, the guy I got the York Tombstone from has another fixer-upper property, and this oil furnace came out of that house. It is an "Emerald by Columbia", which I have never heard of. The furnace is dated November 2017, but based on the unit's condition, I suspect that is actually a service date and not a manufacture date...
