My oil dip stick is stuck - that sucks - no matter how hard I pull on it by hand it doesn't come out - any suggestions ? I've never run into this - is it safe to gab it with pliers and pull hard or will the plastic loop separate ? Should I soak it in silicone or BP Blaster ? Any suggestions/links appreciated - I just don't want to destroy it and have the metal part of the dip stick irretrievable from the tube.

Did you try twisting and pulling?

I've never seen a dipstick get stuck in the tube.
Then again I never saw an oil pan get a hole rusted in it either and I'm oldish...

O-ring probably stuck to the tube opening. Twist the handle first then pull.

Truth be told, the dipstick on my 2014 Tacoma did the exact same thing. I did the "twist and pull" thing to remove it. Before I put it back in, I applied a bit of oil to it where it seals to the dipstick tube.

And as you know, I'm oldish too.

I always have done the "Twist and Pull" method on the dip stick.

Good practice for various rubber parts in general, hoses, ignition coil boots, etc. Learned this trick from Briansmobile1 Youtube channel.

This is still going on, lol. Put a screwdriver through the ring, twist & pull on the screwdriver.

Apparently doesn't check oil level much. The metal won't separate from the plastic. Plastic & O-ring is what's stuck.

Naturally I'm referring to transmission dipsticks here. Glad my '13 has one, makes life easier!

Nine times out of ten I've watched others try to 'unstick' or remove fasteners by using more force. (Kind of like losing your temper) Here's what has worked for me: On anything with plastic, spray a small amount of CRC electronic lubricant/cleaner and using a heat gun briefly WARM the stuck piece. Attempt to remove, wait for cool down, repeat. On metal stuck pieces, spray a small amount of WD40, WARM briefly with heat gun, let cool and attempt to remove. Most often the thermal expansion and contraction combined with the penetrant brings success!

Hey I just went thru the 'stuck dipstick syndrome' and I got it unstuck without breaking it, thank God. I just have some insights to offer.... The guide tube is very long and part of it is almost horizontal. Oil can collect in there. Also, it runs just underneath the exhaust manifold, so the bit of oil in the tube is 'cooking' a bit. Mine showed dried-up tar-like oil just above the oil level marks... so get some liquid wrench in there if you can, and pull and pray. If it were to break, you could still drive it to a shop. Clean off the whole stick and bring it in and out more often. Not a super great design.

I know this is an older thread but Ill add this happened to me once on a Dodge Charger I used to have. The pull ring snapped right off.

Was able to carefully drill a hole in the plastic nub left behind in the tube. Then thread in a small wood screw and pull the whole thing out with pliers. Food for thought incase the ol 'twist and pull' doesn't work for someone in the future
