I’ve got a 1997 Tacoma 5speed with 265k miles that makes a pretty noisy “whirring” noise at idle. I think the noise goes away with the clutch pressed in. The reason I say “I think” is because once the clutch is pressed in, it is then replaced by a higher pitch faster whirring noise. Previous owner said it’s been about 100k miles since the last clutch replacement, so I’d assume it’s about time for a clutch. But I’m really wondering if it is the throw out bearing, pilot bearing, or most dreadful the input shaft bearing.
And I apologize, I know there are plenty of threads on this issue, just nothing that fully sounds like with my issue and nothing that gives a true conclusion.

Not quite identical in sound, but it is identical in behavior. My sound is a little “slower” whirring I guess you could say. And a little bit of very soft “knocking” added to it almost

We are perhaps in the same boat....

3 weeks ago, I started to have a whirring, grinding noise when the clutch is pushed in. It's been getting a little louder as time goes on. It goes away when the truck is in gear and moving. My regular mechanic thought it is the throw out bearing. He sent me to another shop, as he's a one man operation.

They agreed with him, throw out bearing is the main culprit of the noise. Clutch and truck have 406k miles, so not surprising. I'm on their schedule for next week for a clutch replacement. I'll do all the ancillary stuff with it, have them use as high quality parts as possible, etc.

But they also noticed another noise that I missed, which they think is the input shaft bearing. I didn't notice it before but I'm starting to now that they mentioned it. I'm hoping it can wait for a while before I need to rebuild the tranny. I've started a search for a replacement in my area for just in case.

Several forum members have been commenting about this on another thread. I'm on my phone, so I'll post a link to that thread when I'm on my computer instead.
