Because it's a measure of performance like anything else. And like it or not, 15 is a significant difference from 19 (or whatever you got stock), being almost a 25% reduction and on a vehicle with already minimal gas tank range. Also, people like to be informed if they are planning mods or troubleshooting a new behavior.

Your own historical mpg is always the most useful to you (because it takes into account your driving style and conditions), but it still doesn't hurt to check with others.

OP seems long gone, but he likely had his answers from the start (if there was even a question): lifting and putting larger tires on the 5-lug killed his mileage.

OP: I typically got 18-19 mpg, or 300-320 miles before the light came on. On back road type driving, I would get closer to 20 mpg, but I seemed to do less of that the longer I owned the truck. That plus the truck aging seemed to gradually drop my mileage over the course of ownership.

    Too few to list.
Lots of variables to consider though. Most likely different for everyone. Weight of heavier and bigger tires/wheels as well as what is attached to the truck/gearing, etc. I personally just go 65 as it seems to yield the best mpg on the highway. On the street with stop and go with mixed hwy, 16 mpg is my norm.

I mean, yes and no, kinda-sorta.

One thing I like about the 2nd gen 4.0L is that added weight doesn't seem to affect mpg all that much. I seemed to average 15 mpg before I added 300 lbs, and 15mpg after, given the same roads & travel speeds.

I do like the option of squeezing out 18 mpg by doing 55 mph on the highway and 50 up grades. That's 20% more range and 20% less cost per mile.

I haven't done extensive forest-trail runs tracking mpg yet but I expect the same result, i.e. if I'm willing to average 15-20 mph instead of 25-27mph out back, I will get that extra 20% range as well, which could be very handy, esp. combined with 2 or 3 full 5-gallon nato jerry gas cans.

Why? Because the Tacoma is like most vehicles in that there are different combos offered for different reasons.

But heres the kicker... the title of this thread ask what mpg everyone is getting, (more ot less).

16 (which means 14.5-18.5 depending on mostly city or mostly freeway) for a mix of city/freeway.

stock size tires dc long bed and a cab-height shell. FWIW, I was getting about 1mpg more every tank before i switched from Fuzion tires (Model SUV) to Revo 3s. But I think I gained in wet/snow traction, which is what I was aiming for when switching.

Because it’s the reason why I chose the 4-banger and it performs as advertised getting 50% better mileage than my previous truck. That adds up. Just filled up putting 15.3 in after going 385 miles. Another 25mpg tank. We all have different priorities and yardsticks but while it is a truck and not an econobox it can still do well when compared to other trucks.

Skid plates & cat covers, 2WD LO mod (BB Tuning), Fumoto oil drain, ECT Always-On Mod (hardness by Funman1steve), 6awg DC DC tow charger wiring, inline 60 amp breakers & battery terminals, Kill switch, KJTO driver side grab handle, Hood hold open gas struts, Scangauge III, Seat Covers (Seat Covers Unlimited... wearing poorly),
Averages after 7500 miles on a new 2023 4wd Tacoma auto 6ft bed 3.5L engine, with contractor cap and lots of gear:
I only drive in ECT and Manual mode due to the idiotic factory gearing that puts you in fifth uphill at 36 mph. Use Scangauge III to monitor and choose shifting.
Cheap 87 octane 10% ethanol gas, including out West. Tried a couple of tanks of ethanol-free and did not see appreciable difference.

Normal Town/highway mix, max 75 mph: 19 mpg mostly 5th gear on highway.

Cargo load 1500# plus 2800# trailer at 72-80 mph highway cross country 5200 miles: 11mpg. All in fourth gear, occasional third on on ramps or escape, trialed fifth gear but it kept maxing out torque and losing speed.

Scangauge says Manual mode 4th gear is burning about 8.5 gph fuel towing at 75mph. Upshift to fifth gear drops to 5 gph but cannot maintain in headwind or slope.
How could a stronger gear use less fuel versus 'spinning' like a bicycle?

On a recent 1800 mile trip, with a stock 2022 3.5 auto dual cab short bed w/ two adults, a bed full of luggage we got 23.9 mpg for the entire trip. Trip was from Philly area to Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hamphire, Vermont , down to the Poconos in Pennsy and back home. Not much flat ground. Tire inflation 36 psi. This is not by the onboard computer but calculated mathematically after keeping careful records. No highways from Freeport Maine to Mt. Washington, NH to Woodstock, VT., all back roads up and down hills. I consider that to be quite respectable!

I feather the throttle, anticipate changing traffic lights, slow down going uphill, NEVER use cruise control, keep my windows rolled up and CANNOT best 20 miles per gallon of gas.
But that's OK! It's a truck and it just keeps on running!

Mine is pretty awful - 2014 V6 with a 3” lift and 34” tires. I get around 12-15 mpg… It only has 50k miles on it too.

    2014 V6 Dbl Cab w/ ARE bed cap, lifted 1.5" on 265 75 R16 C rated tires - 17 mpg in town, about 20-21 on the freeway.

I often wonder if the bed cap gives me better aerodynamics. Sharing aerodynamics with a rounded off tool box likely doesn't help much but it's probably better than having an open bed

I have been reading this thread for awhile. I was getting concerned getting 14.5 - 15 mpg. Mostly hwy. It's 70mph here and would travel 75+ on average. So, I tired staying below 75 and my mileage jumped to 17mpg. Will be traveling in an area with 65 speed limit, and will try staying 70 or below. No lift and tires are BG Goodrich All Terrains 265/75/17 (which I know will impact mileage abit). My conclusion so far is it's about how you drive it. I'm happy at 17mpg. Appreciate all the great information.

Up to 11 straight @ 24mpg or better. All figured on miles driven/gas purchased.

    2010 DC 4x4 4.0 V6 Automatic = 16-17 MPG typical.
Has been as low as 15 MPG and as high as 20 MPG.
Truck has 138,000+ miles on the odo. The 16+ MPG gas mileage has been consistent.
New air filter, Techron additive, new iridium plugs, synthetic oil etc. does not improve the mileage noticeably.
What has improved the mileage is using gasoline without ethanol, i.e. driving in Mexico. Also, if driving slower than 60-65 mph, which is difficult on California freeways..
