$40K for a 4X4 DC in 2024 is a fair price. My 2007 is a TRD Offroad, I paid just under $30K for mine 17 years ago, no reason to expect to get one for $35K today.

I plan to buy a new, or newer truck sometime in 2025 and have been looking at what is out there online. I can get a 2024 Tacoma equipped the way I want it for about $40K. If I'm buying a 1/2 ton it's going to be Ford, don't like Tundra's after 2006. One equipped the way I want it will cost me $50K-$55K. $10-$15K is a lot of money and I'm at the point where I no longer need the size.

I also currently have a 2014 F150 crew cab 4X4. My plan is to trade it and keep my old Tacoma as a 3rd vehicle.

It may take a while for the new body style of the 4th gens to grow on me, but I'm sure it will.

The feature I'm most interested in is the new turbo engine. I wouldn't have a 3rd gen Tacoma as a gift with the weak engine they put in those. I've driven enough Fords with their turbo to be sold on it. Awesome power and respectable fuel mileage. Ford has been making them since 2011 and they have proven reliable. If Toyota can do as well as Ford, they will have something.

But I'm not sold on the 4th gen Tacoma just yet. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Ford Ranger. They are going to start putting their 2.7L V6 with turbo's in them. Even the 2.3L four cylinder has way more power than 3rd gen Tacoma. Ford beats Tacoma in real world payload by a wide margin. Forget published specs, real world 4X4 crew cab Tacoma's have 1000-1200 lbs payload. Ranger equipped the same way has 1500-1600 lbs payload.

A used 21 or 22 Ranger can be had for closer to $30K. There are no options for used 4th gen Tacoma's. That is something I'll have to look at too.

I don't want CarPlay or a tape deck in any vehicle.

I'd buy a 4G if the XtraCab I wanted which varies was on the lot with a $5k discount, and rates have to be a much better.

I don't want the fanciest Toyota truck, just something to run around in. GM or Ford 1/2 ton short bed could do the same job.

Just focusing on the impact of inflation, your 2007 truck would cost over $46K in today's dollars.

The compounding effect of inflation is relentless.

    True dat.
But also true is the buying power of the dollar in 2007.
I wonder how that compares and would wager a crisp $1.00 that the money made in 2007 would allow you to pay cash for that $46k truck
and still maintain a 3-2 house with food on the table, money in the bank, and a wife that didn't have to work.

Prices of everything have gone crazy. The last 20-50 years wages have not gone anywhere.

For instance, in 1972 my father grossed $42,000.
That $42,000 in 1972 had the buying power of some $300,000 today.
    The last salary I drew ( pre-covid ) was $80,000 a year. Was that worth $600,000.....?..... I wish.

Meanwhile the likes of Bezos make about 85-million per day.
    Day in, day out.
Good for Jeff. Glad to live in a country that allows that to happen.

Bottom line tho is more for him, less for the rest us.
Oh and most of us pay more in taxes percentage wise than poor ole Jeff.... breaks my heart.

Nothing... I don't want a 2 Liter turbo engine. I like my NA engine just fine and not a whole `nother layers of bells and whistles I don't want or need.

What is wrong with 2007 tundras and newer? I had an 05 and then an 07 with the 5.7. The 2007 was superior in every aspect, loved the truck for 16 years and 231000 trouble free miles. Ford f150, no way. Good truck but no way you are putting 0 dollars into it for repairs over 16 years. No way getting a new frame and leaf springs from Ford at 175k miles either for free. Toyota takes care of its customers. F Ford, they calculate death money.

I'm a huge fan of my '22 6MT so it there's no driving factor for me to replace it with a 4th gen. If I needed to, with the Ranger Raptor priced very nicely, I would happily choose that over the Tacoma.

    EDIT:

Out of curiosity I went online and configured a '24 Off Road with a 6MT and optioned out to where it's got more fun stuff than my '22 Pro and it came out to $52K. Reasonably priced in my opinion. It's more powerful, more comfortable and probably just as capable as my '22 Pro and priced the same as I paid for it a couple years ago.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I configured a '24 TRD Off-Road the way I like it and it turned out to be $45k-$46k.

If I have to replace my truck now, I would love to ask for $40k-$42k. But, that kind of deal may not be realistic.

My '22 TRD Off-Road is $39k. I think it's just worth $35k all day long.

If you 'need/really want' a Tacoma right now, A) you are going to pay, for what many believe is a very high price, or B) an over inflated priced used one. It's almost at the point where including price into any Tacoma purchasing decision isn't worth the brain cells. Your ain't gonna 'win' with either choice.

Styling aside, for me it just boils down to the reliability of the new Tacoma platform. If I was convinced it was solid and would last for years to come, a price reduction for a 2024 need't be drastic...but I am not completely convinced. Now on the other hand, I am not convinced that the competition from some damned fine looking trucks Colorado, Canyon, Ranger is any better.

I test drove the 4th gen on Saturday. It was a sr5 double cab short bed. I did really like the truck but the power delivery on the 3rd gens just seem more natural. 4th gen seemed “tinny” sounding on acceleration I guess that’s to be expected from a 4cyl turbo. The 3rd gen also seemed “tighter” overall. Who knows though a test drive isn’t long enough to form a solid opinion. The price wasn’t to bad they had the truck discounted down to $41k. If I ended up trading in my current 2023 my out the door number would be $21500 with a 9 percent interest rate. I ended up passing.

@Gfenza89 - I would think the discounts on SR5s would be crazy good right now. I've seen tons of them on lots including ~15 today at a dealer in VA. But, yeah it would be hard for me to part with a gen 3 also.

Wow that’s crazy, yeah the dealer was kinda begging me to buy it. Said they have had it for 68 days. There’s just no way I’m gonna almost double my “final” number with finance plus give up a 4.99 interest rate for a 9 percent rate. Not to mention my 3rd gen sr5 has a power sliding rear window, power driver seat, dual zone climate control, and a factory hard bed cover, not of which the 4th gen sr5 had

If the 4th gen feels less well built than the 3rd gen that's pretty awful. I don't find the fit and finish or quality of materials in my '22 to be all that spectacular. It definitely wasn't an huge upgrade from my '11 Titan SL or '00 F150 Lariat.
