Any chance you can do a write up of 3 months over ownership?

I think the slider on my 2012 was a $50 or $100 option, it's not powered so there's that.

I also have 8" screen and its perfect. I can see what I need (maps/radio) without a huge distraction. Granted I'm coming from a cellphone cradle on windshield in my 1G but I just dont see the need for a giant honking TV screen on the dash. It works and I dont even notice the big bezel, another popular TW complaint. I'm too busy driving and focusing on the road to notice.

90 % of Tacomas in Canada are Long beds, In my opinion they look way too stretched out like a limousine. I prefer the short box.

A manual long bed would be sweet.

Coming from a 5th gen 4Runner the screen is still an upgrade. The gigantic screen is nice but in Canada they bundle it up in packages that don't make a ton of sense for what you're getting.

You're not watching movies in your truck, why would you need a screen that big.

Either way it feels like both screen look odd for the truck, like th 8 inch is a bit small and make the cabin look empty and the 14 is just comically big and looks like someone added it in.

Agree. My 2017 Sport was a DCLB and the turning radius was stupid. Handled like a full size truck with none of the benefits of one. To make a DCLB look good you need a bit of a ridiculous lift to get it proportioned out. Otherwise yeah it looks a bit limo-esque.

After jumping to a 5th gen 4Runner I knew I couldn't do a long bed again. That and the manual transmission made me go DCSB this time.

I also briefly had a access cab and driving all three configurations double cab short bed is in my opinion the best compromise. 6ft beds are nice but the number of cases where the 6ft bed would work and a 5ft wouldn't aren't that many.

My friend is in automotive tech, research and development plus human factors engineering. In his opinion, big screens will be the standard and smaller screens will be the upgrade; he thinks a 10 inch screen will be the “perfect” size in the next decade.
Obviously, just one smart industry tech geek dude opinion.
The smaller screen was a dealbreaker for me, I came from a Tesla, but my phone is the 13 mini. Go figure, ha.

Dude I built a house in 2020 and put all new Samsung appliances in… microwave sensors are no longer working, stove digital display and clock missing leds, dishwasher gasket installation shit and had to file down parting line flash on a plastic part so it would mate correctly. If you have a choice, keep looking…

i know you didn’t ask me but I’ve had mine a similar length of time and here’s my early impressions.

truck: ‘24 trd or dclb bronze oxide, jbl speaker, sliding window, bed wiring, 14’’ screen

I’ve owned two third gen Tacomas, dcsb and dclb

    Pro:
    - Fuel economy consistently between 22/23 this was validated with the Fuelly app
    - Bed is noticeably deeper when hauling loads -holds more goodies
-amazing over washboard, I live in the sticks and this is a big plus compared to my previous sport trims
    -good visibility
-quiet on road, no squeaks, no rattles (just the 4 banger lol)
-engine and transmission are light years ahead of 3rd gen
-head lights are nice, visibility is great
-grille proportions closer to 2nd gen is big plus for me and I really like the fogs(I know, subjective)
    -light tailgate is nice
    -comes with Toyota branded gasshole(lol)
    -door pockets are great
-rear seat room better than my 3g
-phone charging setup orientation works well
-Plastics feel durable, parting line flash minimal and fit are good
-flat surface for arm to rest on when window rolled down is great
-under seat space large and open
    -headspace improved
    -seating position improved
-longer wheelbase is noticeable, I like the driving characteristics and proportions, the short beds seem smaller than before but I don’t have measurements to support that, maybe one of you does

    Cons:
-gas tank small for someone like me who drives 2k miles a month, it seems like they went full in on the psychology of people and their wallets. Even with gas close to $4/gal it’s in the $50 some dollar range to fill - think this keeps negativity about fuel costs down and starts to condition people to the normalization of 250-300 miles of range in advance of more ev rollouts
-Toyota’s infotainment is still meh, but better than last gen and 4Runner, the maps have grown leaps and bounds better
-audio is decent enough but my civic with the Bose sound system was better. Point being is at the price point it should beat the civic
-rear window smaller, prefer previous style(personal preference)
-rear window control trigger is puny, should have incorporated this feature into the silver triggers by the hvac instead of up by the drivers overhead cabin lights
-don’t get the defroster coils in rear window, I’ve lived in the northeast winters forever and this has literally not once ever been an issue on a vertical truck window. Like ever.
-paint is thin, already have a chunk out of the hood and peoples doors have nicked the doors up (ffs why do I park in left field and this still happens? lol…) but, to be fair, end of winter stone situation in my area is rough
-not sure about long term durability of the shiny colored plastic on dash in front of passenger seat but verdict is out
-digital gauge cluster is ok, can be busy and why can’t the cruise control icon be hidden when it’s off?? My civic had an impeccably designed digital cluster
-light color cloth on seats is dumb(3g issue in some cases too), why put an easy to stain cloth on a high traffic surface?
-Toyotas oem all weather mats are terrible from a coverage perspective, once tuxmat has options available I’ll be getting those!

idk what else, I’m sure I’ll remember more when I get in it haha, if you have questions feel free to ask

Great writeup, appreciated! Are your seats the "white" or silver insets?
Did you apply something like a Scotchgard or do you plan to get seat covers when more options are available?

They are the silver ones, still think it’s a crazy choice… I have not scotchguarded them and I likely won’t, just wash them once a year and deal with it, I expect some wear but just make the whole seat the dark color

Oh man, sign me up for the black seats haha, I tried to provide an objective view of what I like and don’t like.

As far as what I’d pick, I think it’s a wash honestly… the Tacoma is pretty good at being decent at everything but not great at anything. The engine and transmission probably sway me to 4G but 3G currently holds a solid reliability record. TBH if I had my original 2018 dcsb in quicksand today I would just keep it but hindsight is 20/20… sold it for a fast buck in 2021 at the height of the vehicle lunacy, then bought a brand new car at msrp, sold it immediately and pocketed 7k then bought another taco that I sold a year later above msrp as well so… idk the 4G is nice, I don’t know that there’s a real reason to change vehicles if you own a 3G. Keep the truck you have, (hopefully) low interest rate, and lower msrp for a vehicle that does the same things… hope that’s clear as mud?
