Worst case scenario, put some super glue on it.

Cool idea, but doesn’t the 2UZ barely have 20 horsepower over the 1FZ?

The motors can have the same HP but they are significantly different in many ways, even just the way they drive.

Looking for a quick sanity check, without all the noise I know I'll get from a new thread.

I ran a leak down test on my 3RZ today, trying to chase down an uneven idle. Compression numbers weren't bad, but were inconsistent between cylinders (150psi in cyl 4, others 130-ish). The engine is perfectly driveable and hasn't had any issues apart from the uneven idle and a P0420 that I think is due to exhaust leaks (it went away for ~2 weeks after I replaced the gaskets around the cat but just came back yesterday).

The leak down test indicated leakage between cylinders, most notably between #2 and #3. There was also some air loss past the rings and maybe a bit past the exhaust valves, but that seems normal to me, especially from a 230k engine. The valve clearances are all in spec, although some are at the edge of spec.

The engine was opened up by a previous owner. I was told that head work was done, but I don't know exactly what or when. It was rebuilt with Fel-Pro exhaust and valve cover gaskets, so I assume the current head gasket is also Fel-Pro.

I've read that 3rz heads are known to crack, but most of what I've read talks about cracking between valves, not between cylinders.

So my question is this: Would anybody expect that this is simply a bad head gasket, or would you expect a cracked head as well?

If you’re not losing coolant, I’m not sure it’d be a b sheaf or head gasket. It sounds like it could just be slightly worn rings/valves like you said.

    Everything but the driveshaft. B03A - 410
Seat of the pants torque. But the real reason is to utilize a perfectly good engine, trans, transfer case, drive shaft and maybe some rear shocks and springs in a slightly smaller package that I can give a 3" lift.

I'm looking for an 80 with a blown engine and trans. It will be fun to build it for my kids to enjoy.

    Sounds like a cool project.
As an aside, I just got back from a trip north and was surprised by the number of built 80s I saw roaming around the mountains. Nice to see them being used.

Got a suspicious package on my porch the other day….full of foam peanuts, inside jokes, and very sus bottle openers. Already gave one of the bottle openers to the gf, for her, uh , enjoyment. I think the f-bomb is getting welded to the truck somewhere, and I have no idea what to do with the singing muffins.

Thank you very much @Kwikvette, you’re awesome.
