Hopefully this question isn't too out of line for this thread. I have a family friend who's wife passed unexpectedly. She was hiding his early dementia, and now everyone is stepping up to help get him into a better situation. Today I was told he has a "bunch" of guns and needs to sell them because money is tight. I've only ever bought guns, never once sold one. What's the best way to sell guns? I live in a very gun friendly state so any complications are going to come from the Federal level.

Oh and I have no idea what a bunch of guns is. I'm going over tomorrow to see what he has. My bet is a couple of deer rifles from the 1950's

I suggest getting an appraisal of all the guns before selling any of them. Knowing the current value of the guns should make selling them easier.

Otherwise, gunbroker.com is a good site (there are others as well) for selling guns, ammo and accessories.

I mean it’s possible he’s got a stash. I’m pretty sure my wife would be legit shocked at how many I own (technically “owned” since the boating accident) if she were in that position

    Gun shows maybe.

The problem is that if people don't know what they have, and it's not been documented, it's probably not that valuable. Barn finds are always possible, but not likely. Selling old cheap stuff is time consuming and usually not worth the effort. Paying $150 for a gun show table, then sitting there all weekend is laborious. Shipping used guns is a hassle, you'll need an FFL on both ends. Consignment is an option, but you're going to take a big profit hit.

Maybe there's one or two gems? In that situation, I'd maybe look at buying out the estate. Then sell off the average stuff as time permits. I know some retired folks that enjoy doing this.

First take an inventory of what he has. Get all the info. , manufacturer, caliber, , model, serial #, general condition etc etc. Take pictures of the guns. Then research the net to get an idea what they are worth.
Check with the gun stores around your area. Many or most buy used guns and some will sell them on consignment. Even some of the large stores like Cabelas and Sportsmens Warehouse buy guns. I got a decent price on a couple of 38 specials I sold to Sportsmens Warehouse. You won’t get their full value but it’s an easy way to off load guns. Trying to sell them yourself would be a real hassle and time consuming.

Call around at local gun stores. We have a local place that sells on consignment (last time I asked) for 10% of the sale price. They will list nicer pieces on Gun Broker for (I think it was) 10% plus auction fees and they pocket shipping and handling (fair enough) Another FFL I use regularly pays 70% of “book value” if you want to sell it outright but condition is subjective.

+1 for Sprig and Scott B's recommendations above. Just be careful. BATFE is currently pushing interpretation of regs that COULD lead them to argue you need an FFL in this scenario. Definitely don't agree with that and not trying to get political. Just a word of caution.

An inventory and some photos and this bunch here...we can value the collection

I'd then shop around gun shops in the area and find the lowest consignment fee and put them all up...or see if you can negotiate between a couple dealers on buying the whole collection

    That's the easiest way
