Custom cold air intake

Just wondering if anyone has made a custom cold air intake with the K&N clamp on air filter instead of buying the $300 kit?

Your truck has a factory cold air intake, no need for an aftermarket one.

I wouldn't recommend it, aftermarket intakes especially the cheap ones skew the MAF sensor signal and you end up with codes and/or driveability issues.

Not hating, just stating facts.
The MAF sensor is calibrated to the stock air induction system, when you change the diameter and/or airflow characteristics of the tube the MAF sensor sits in you skew the reading from the MAF sensor.
Some quailty intakes match it "close enough" that the PCM can compensate for it but the majority of the cheap ones cause issues.

 

I dunno. I wanna see how it turns out if he makes a custom one

 

It's his truck, he can do as he wishes.
I'm just making sure he knows the potential consequences of doing so because I end up having to deal with this kinda stuff when it ends up in the shop for driveability issues, I can't tell you how much Amazon/ebay junk I've had to take off and replace with quality parts to fix issues.

I hate dealing with parts cannon vehicles, they typically have many "built in" issues to deal with before I can go after the original problem.

 

If you do, please document how it performs better than the factory unit your truck came with.

Water is so much more effective at cooling than just a "cold air" intake - spraying cold water into the intake will increase power even more than cold air.

 

Now now guys, this was his first post. Everyone on here started at zero at some point in their lives too...

OP, there are about a thousand other more useful/beneficial mods to make on your truck by searching and researching on this forum. Start building that list and just keep putting the CAI idea at the bottom of it!

 

Bonus if you only drive in cold climate all the time. Like.. there must be atleast a few inches of snow on the ground all year round in order to get the best cold air intake. Don't forget to put a chunk of dry ice in after the intake filter too... if dry ice doesn't fit, remove filter all together
