That's more of a textbook answer with oil filters that have a rubber seal around the outer edge...as opposed to o-ring near contact point.

This aluminum housing assembly has a clip that engages upon contact. I also check for leaks after replacing the paper filter.

TBH, I don't even use that tab. When the shoulder of the filter hits the shoulder of the block adapter, and there is no gap between the two, the housing stops. There's no moving even one degree let alone ninety

Wonder how many hundreds of thousands of Tacoma's are out there that have never been modified with 200 thousand + miles on them and still working fine?

^Probably working fine but leaking oil like 2nd gen V6 timing covers. Most Toyota owners don't open the hood so they're none the wiser.

Mine don't leak at 100 and fifty K. Well it has worked for them if they didn't open the hood. Open mine every 5k do things like grease drive shafts replace oil and filters you know normal stuff.

You're right. probably the same amount of people that don't read this forum and think Toyota is infallible or just don't care.

If they are getting the dealership to change the oil, the filter probably hasn't been changed since it was installed from the factory. You can't damage anything if you never touch it!

My OEM plastic filter cap leaked after 8 oil changes done exclusively by myself. I replaced it with another OEM plastic filter cap. So far it's holding after 3 oil changes. Time will tell.

We learned that one is true here, didn’t we?
Did he ever get the truck running right? Haven’t seen an update in a few weeks.

Son in Law has his roll of the bench. It leaked from a very hard to see crack.

Very nice. I kept the composite one as a spare after I changed over to the aluminum one.

Bring your truck over to my shop. I’ll show you 1st hand how you can get an extra quarter turn after the lip contacts the housing.

We can discuss torque, leverage and clamping force.

So the intent of that clip is to retain the cap, should it be loose. It isn’t supposed to be able to vibrate past this circled area. The poly filter cap has it as well.

And also discuss the physics of how the internal Oring does all the sealing, so therefore there's absolutely no reason to ridiculously tighten the housing.
