Some people feel they are underproofed but I'd argue they're about perfect at 90. The oak might be a bit much if it were more concentrated.

 

I’ll agree with @jandrews - it’s pretty good but the oak is prominent. I’d say after opening it and having a few pours, it’s mellowed a bit but definitely more oak forward than the KC18 that I’ve had side by side.

Is it worth the price? I have the regular Magnus, and it's....mehhh, didn't want to drop $200 until I know it's worth it

 

EHT for $45 would be good deal, but Blanton's is still over priced at $63...

 

Man I totally agree. I bought a bottle for my friend who I owed a few favors to...at the time, $130 for the bottom end bottle. I finally found a bottle of my own two weeks ago for $90...and while it's got Buffalo Trace signature grape notes, it's not at all a $90 bottle.

 

There’s no distributor involved so this is kind of a skewed view of what pricing should or could be. BT is making more on these bottles than any others they sell.

Well yeah of course they are making more money cutting out the distributor. But they are almost certainly selling at what they think the MSRP should be. I've been to a bunch of distilleries around TN and none of them have sold their product at a discounted price. More often than not, I can find their product for less in my local liquor stores than in the distillery gift shop.

 

Don’t know about the Weller SR, but the rest of the prices in the top box appear to be about three to five bucks below SRP, I presume intentionally so. Make the people feel like they’re getting an awesome deal while the sales are also quite profitable. I wonder what the actual distillery cost is to produce each of those bottles.

 

I don't know about all the cost but I know the taxes are high, at $13.50 a 100 proof gallon for the Feds, and I don't know how much the states add if anything to that bill. I do wonder how that is broken down as it doesn't come out of the barrel at 100 proof, nor do they always proof it down to 100. Though overall I think their margins are good, the investment is kinda risky with the length of time you have put your money down before you'll get any return.

But I've grown skeptical of buying from the gift shops. I've been burned on a bottle of Ownby they said was available only at the distillery, only to find it for $10 less in a liquor store a month later. Leiper's Fork sells for $80 at the distillery, but it's $75 in my local stores.

 

Yeah it’s definitely risky business, especially with all the distilleries massively expanding their production in recent years. If the bubble bursts it’ll be ugly, but I’ll buy all the Pappy
