I'm sorry, but I just can't get behind this- smaller displacement, power adder- idea that's been introduced over the last several years. Just redesign the motor thats been in them, try to work on all the short comings from the last one and go from there. Going with a smaller motor but "HEYYYY, its turbo charged!!" is just more stuff to mess up and expensive stuff on top of that.

Also, another idea (or scenario) I can't get out of my head is this, the older a vehicle gets, the more the horsepower takes a hit and its not as peppy as before. So like Ford with their Ecoboost. Ahhh, its all cool at first, but at the end of the day when that truck has 150k miles on it and its tired, you have a fullsize with a damn V6 in it...

In this case, when that truck has some mileage, been through one or two owners and heaven forbid been toting around 1,000lbs worth of winches, tents and all that junk, you have a crew cab, midsize truck with a 4cylinder.

That's just my opinion. Different strokes for different folks and also, who am I kidding?! We are living in a time where most truck owners don't plan on having the truck after it sees 100k+ miles.

The problem with that line of thinking is that they already did that. That is why the 2GR-FKS replaced the 1GR-FE, and even that didn't make all that much difference in mpg or emissions. Only so much can be accomplished, they can't just keep making the same type of engine ever more efficient. There comes a point where in order to meet the criteria, they have to come up with an alternative engine design, and that's how every manufacturer landed on turbos.

You live in LA... I'm in Sacramento.

Q: is this tune smog legal?

What exactly are the benefits for an otherwise stock 3.5 with A/T?

I believe Toyota is counting on most owners not holding onto a vehicle past the warranty period, just look at their 2024 lineup if you need proof of that.

Keep in mind that Toyota gained a new CEO in Jan 2023 and the new boss may not have the same ideologies regarding quality and reliability that Akio Toyoda had. Akio was the grandson of Toyota's founder so he had a personal stake in the "Toyota" brand beyond financial.

One reason, if not the main reason for Akio being replaced was his reluctance to dive head first into the EV market with Toyota.

It seems Toyota is adopting the US pick-up maker aesthetic... Those wheel wells look silly. They are too big. And this makes the whole truck look silly with the tiny looking tires.

Just saw a whole line of Enterprise Tacoma rentals. I guess Toyota is moving into the former Frontier space.

Agree. It needs larger tires for one. But, ride was similar.

A couple of other notes I had:
    • Rear camera resolution is disappointing for the larger screen.
    • Steering wheel controls are confusing. Yes, I had no experience with it.
    • I had four people get in with me (850 lbs.?), and everyone noticed when I punched it.
    • After driving my 3rd Gen a lot today, I could get use that that turbo. What a difference.
    • Still, I'd wait for a few years, maybe even until the first refresh. Shame that Toyota got rid of the AC.

I am a new forum member. Nice to meet you all, although I am far away from most forum members residing South of the Canadian border (I live in the interior of Alaska).

I bought a new (out of the dealer's lot, not driven) 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road about three weeks ago as a present to my wife, because she wanted nothing to do with the 2024 models ("too bulky" she said). That said, I am with BMH (another poster in this thread) about the new turbo-4 in that it's another thing that can cause problems. This engine is new and doesn't have a track record like the 6-cylinder engine in the 2023 Tacoma does.

Yes, the 2024 Tacoma has a lot more bells and whistles, including disk brakes all around, but by the time you add all the options you want the price for this truck will be sky high. While the 4-turbo engine is more powerful than the V6, the turbo will be screaming along the way while burning "maybe" 3 MPG less fuel than the V-6, but city driving both the 4-turbo and the V-6 burn about the same amount of fuel. The 4-turbo has to work harder than the V-6, and as you already know turbos are the most useful at higher engine RPM.

On another note: should you want to buy an off-brand aluminum or composite oil cartridge housing for you Toyota truck or car, make sure that this oil filter cover (cap) comes with a perforated aluminum pipe in the middle. If you don't make sure it has one and install oil cartridge this way, the cartridge will collapse in a short period of time and cause the oil pressure and flow to drop.

Just north of L.A., but yes, L.A. County. I just recently heard a Tacoma passed smog with the 2.1. I don’t know if Yotawerx is planning a certification.

It has VERY GOOD torque down low, and effortless. You don’t have to give a lot of input on the throttle. I’ve had good mpg’s too.

It’s a bad ass tune. The tip in so damn smooth. I’ve yet to test it in 4LO, but that will be soon.

On par with KDMAX PRO10 Sport+ at higher elevations.

All I can tell you, as a retired Yota Tech, this is the kind tune, and should have come from Toyota Japan.

The benefits are countless, and so are the smiles.

After decades of hot-rodding cars and computers, I have learned that each is like a h*****... if you don't f*** with it, it won't go down.

*IF* a tune will pass CA smog, I am not at all averse to applying this to my otherwise bone-stock truck.

Years ago, I had Iskenderian grind me a special cam for my specific needs in a stock Chevy 350 with an Edelbrock Performer, Hedman Hedders, and a 650 carb.
I wanted Low End Grunt, and didn't care a bit about anything above 3,500 rpm.
I got exactly what I wanted.

Diddling with cam timing (back then) simply shifted the power range to where I wanted it.
    More Grunt, less Top.

Today, the VVT-i has hydraulic variable cam timing under computer control, and therefore subject to control by a Tune.

I'd like to find a Tune that delivers the torque in the low range I desire.
    And pass CA smog.

Hear hear, I had Clay Smith Cams locally build custom camshaft for my 63C10 wrap-around window stepside. I have since given C10 to my niece and her husband.

Yes, 2nd Gen Tacoma passed CA smog. The cool thing about this tune is it has it down low, midrange, and up top. Some of us have experienced a slight hiccup, but even with that said, I highly recommend it and is well worth the money because I'm sure they are not sitting on their asses. I expect a stout tune when it's all said and done. My favorite is probably the downshift into 1st, and the pull up to 2nd gear @7500, and it just keeps going.

I hear you, the Toyota dealer gave me a 24 Tacoma Limited as a loaner, and It was a great truck but I'm not ready to make the jump to a fourth gen.

YotaWerx’s Black Hawk 2.1 is the tune for low end work for the 2GR-FKS. Take it for what’s its worth(the forum), this is data taken on Fusion via Toyota pids. The pull down low from this V6 is stout in the minimal input one has to give. The photo says it all. It’s so damn pleasurable driving off from a stop. I mean effortless in the coolest of ways. No reason to be slamming the pedal to get going anymore. Fucking endless smiles. It’s just too bad it came about this late in the generation’s life!!!!

    1667 rpm’s-31% throttle input-249.349 foot pounds of torque-2nd gear.

And that’s just what was logged. So much more data not being seen because of the relatively slow refresh rate.

By the way, I see you live near Pollock and White Pines. If you feel like taking a drive on a Sunday morning, you should stop on by and check out the lumberjack jubilees. Fast saws and fun times!!!! First one up is Tuolumne, last sunday this month.
