But the recall affects the first two years (and possibly the third).

People aren’t using models that were designed, engineered, and built within the last decade as a bastion of Toyotas reliability.

Why are people buying new Toyotas today based on how reliable they were in the 90s and early 00s?

    90's? Early 2000s? I'll buy a 4th gen because of how reliable my 2016 3rd gen is.

Data from the last 10 years still supports Toyota/Lexus being the most reliable. In addition to reliability, in my opinion, Toyota interiors tend to age better than the competition (wear better and appear less dated).

Instead of buying my new ‘16, I had also considered buying a new outgoing 2015, and in hindsight I probably should have. That ‘16 was a nice truck, just not finished. A couple years later, my 2018 OR was excellent, so maybe that’s how Gen4 goes.

toyota had some dud engines in the 80s and 90s too. the 7m and 3vz both had head gasket issues. the 3vz so bad they were replacing engines well outside of warranty

I traded my 4.0 2014 2nd gen for a 2016 trd sport 3rd gen in October 2015 and never had any mechanical problems for 92k miles and just traded it for 2024 trd sport and this new engine and trans drives so nice the extra torque this engine produces comes in at very low rpms it's a pleasure to drive no laggy gas pedal. It has a warranty so you are covered. There is alot of room under the hood to access the turbo and other components. It has a real oil filter back on it. Wife has a lexus tx350 with the same engine and it drives awesome too. I tried to talk myself out of wanting a 4th gen because my 3rd gen was great but this 2024 is way better in all departments. Go test drive one you don't have to get the fully loaded trd the sr5 has the same engine well equipped and starts at 36k.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Xtracab Trail Boss trim. Start with a SR XC, give it the higher output T4, 4x4 with the rear locker front fogs and the TRD overfenders. Leave the steel wheels and put a +size set of AT tires on it.

Yep, I'm aware. I probably wouldn't buy the first few years of new gen, just especially the first. I think around mid cycle refresh/end is the best.

Tundra engines made in Alabama and Lexus engines made in Japan. Rumor was that there was "one guy" in Alabama that was screwing up the engine assembly.

Does this mean a design flaw? Could be an assembly instruction manual flaw. New guy does it by the book while old timers know to properly flush block before assembly even though it's not in writing.

Sounds about right as an Alabama resident myself. Don’t get me started, work with nurses that definitely killed people due to incompetence.

Not slamming Alabama. If the LX is included they're making mistakes too. Maybe the Lexus workers are generally more meticulous and that's why the Lexus failures are less common. I wonder if all of the short blocks are cast in the same factory.

They probably only sell a 5-10k lexus versions a year. I thought this 3.5 twin turbo was used in older models Lexus cars? No recalls for those, something must have changed.

Not sure what it says about the manufacturing process at that particular plant if one guy could F-up an entire batch of engines. Regardless, its a major black eye for Toyota. Tundra is a mess.

I think its a design issue and they are just using that as a scape goat, I mean there are 2024's having the same issue.

The videos I watched seem to indicate a design flaw. They attempted to fix it, but it appears the new design did not fix the bearing and seal issue.
