I don’t get why Kentucky Owl is priced so high. I’ve tried a couple varieties and didn’t think it was anything special.

There is an owner of several liquor stores in the Longmont - Denver area…famous price gouger. Check out his insane markups .
EHT small batch, MSRP, $52. His price $249. Single Barrel, $299. Boss Hog, $749. MWND, $399

My good buddy picked me up today to get me out of the house a bit, knowing I haven’t been out much the last two weeks since knee surgery. Went on a good day and picked up the EC B524 batch. The A batch was also available but was only 1 per customer. So went with B. I haven’t even opened the three EC (A, B and BP) bottles I got last year.

But this B524 is really good. I added a few ice chips after the initial sip - it was drinking hot and those chips opened this up to a flavor bomb and softened it up as well. Also picked up an Old Forester Rye, haven’t had that bottle before.

My experience with Kentucky Owl, great provenance, very low in quality and delivery of a solid product. Dettling, Frey Ranch, and Bardstown blow it outta the water at half the price.

A lot of people bash the Elijah Craig barrel proof's, but I have 4 of them, and consider then an outstanding value for the $$

Last night was at a little bar and restaurant owned by my friend’s brother, with a group that included said friend. At the end of the night I asked the bartender what they do with Blanton’s toppers, since they always have a bottle. She says, we sell them based on cash offers. I couldn’t believe she said that with a straight face.

I really wonder what people pay for them. My local spot back in Denver,
if you finished the bottle they gave you the stopper.

If I finished the bottle I’d expect to keep the topper, not pay for it. They sell all the time on eBay, anywhere from like $5-$20 each depending on quantity. Paying for the topper, in my opinion, ruins the whole concept of walking away with a memento.

A couple of rear window decals...
I got to see Oliver Anthony at the Caverns amphitheater yesterday. Despite the rain it was a good show. Their concession stand was a bit week, with only Miller Lite and Modelo for beer, and a bunch of fufu drinks. They had zero hard liquor available. :annoyed: So I had to make due with a couple Modelos during the show.:pout:
    IMG_5164.jpg

When we got home I decided to try out the Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat. I thought it was good. A little hot, but not the noticeable burn that I get with some of the higher proof stuff. Though I was rather annoyed that they use a twist cap on their bottles. I'm a old school, and prefer a cork to cap in my bottles. Especially when it is a premium priced bottle.
    IMG_5172.jpg

After trying the Red Wheat, I was curious how it would compare with the Old Elk Wheated.
    IMG_5175.jpg

Hands down the Old Elk was an easy winner. I was just a bit sweeter, and much smoother on the pallet. I didn't expect there to be such a big difference there being only a small difference in the proof, Old Elk being 115 proof vs Holladay at 120 proof. Both are good sippers if you like the wheat, but this Old Elk is high gonna rank on my list of favorite bourbons!

    Battle of the ryes tonight:

    1. Balcones Texas Rye, phew man, this bottle assaults you with flavors all over the place. It hits you with dark syrupy cherry, then spearmint, some citrus, then bam…honeydew melon. On the finish the rye sticks with you, some notes of malt, and peaty smoked scotch. Interesting for a 100% rye mash bill. This won’t be for everyone unless you are into crafts that bring new sides to the palette.
