I have a 30 amp/9500 watt to keep the well and my fridge/freezer going mostly.
The house electrical hook up was the most $$ due to some odd configuration stuff.
    But all in was ~2K
Vs 12k+ for whole house, automatic, blah blah

Luckily for me I can do all the electrical myself, that would be the most expensive part of it all. Sometimes being an industrial technician pays off...

I wired in a 220 volt at the back of the house. Unfortunately, it's too expensive (for me) to replace the whole box so it won't back feed the power lines. Having said that 9000 watt can damn near power your whole house.

    I can appreciate your reasoning.
The outage you just experienced (2 plus days) is pretty much a worst case scenario.
    You gotta ask yourself:
Is a generator worth it when 99% of outages for most people are a few hours at most?
    That's just an annoyance.

    However...
I've lived through a couple extended outages in the dead of Winter and was glad to have my work generator.

This is about where I am now.
A quiet, minimalist inverter backup of 20 amps is enough (and I think you could get by with that).
You don't have to have everything plugged in at the same time.
Safe for electronics and sips gas (how much gas do you wanna keep on hand?).

I still have my third (and last) work generator.
(Every one of them was loud and used a lot of gas.)
    I really should sell it.
    Wanna buy it, cheap? :)

Anyway, to my mind a whole house system is simply out of the question.

I sold my 9000 watt and 4000 watt about 8 months ago. Kept my 1800 watt. Thinking about getting an inverter to replace that. Like you said, much quieter.

I don't think so - they can fuck off with most everyone else..

But hitting them with a taser would be funny AF; don't even front that it wouldn't!

    Nice!!
My neighbor does a similar thing - he does all his own [otherwise $$] house work and does an excellent job..

I got the generator for 1/2 off because it doesn't have a CO auto shut off, which I think the goberment now mandates or some shit..
Either way, if I am stupid enough to run it in a closed garage, I deserve to die
I know better so the 50% off was sweet

Yup, I'm the same way. I have to do everything myself otherwise it wouldn't get done. Enclosed the carport myself, added a half bath, tons of plumbing, etc. I did have a member on here replace my main electrical panel. I could do it, but I'd rather have a licensed master electrician do the bulk of it since the meter had to get pulled.
