Any woodworkers?

So my first attempt at gluing this joint failed miserably and I had to pull it apart. I now have clean up to do as I couldn't get all the glue off the surfaces. Ugh.

Question. I saw a method using cauls (?) glue to painters tape with CA glue. Would this work with the pressure I have to apply to pull the joint tight? I'm trying to avoid using metal fasteners and really don't want to.pocket screw from the bottom. Unfortunately the outside edge is live and not a good fit for making and gluing blocks on to square up the clamps.

Ideas? Links?

Do you have the edge doweled at the long part of that piece?

Id make 4 90° brackets carpet tape them down on opposite sides of the long section on both sides of the project, then clamp those down then pinch the 90° brackets together. If that makes sense

 

Finished it up today. Damn tag is off center so I may pull it and redo it. But for now, it’s done enough to make it to my office tomorrow

 

There are 4 half inch oak dowels. There were five, but even with the dowel jig one was way off. I'm starting to think I may have a pinch point in the corner. On the dry fit one of the dowels was about 1/8th inch too long, so I double checked all if them and don't think that's an issue.

I tried something similar with 2x4s, but no tape and couldn't get enough pressure on the 2x4s to keep them in place. I'll give the tape a try and maybe plane the surface of the 2x4s to get better adhesion.

 

OK, Im calling it "Fixed" I removed and cleaned the dust collection components as well as the trunnions, clearanced the frame rail so the motor would not longer contact it upon beveling and reengineered the bevel screw drive mechanism. And now it wont cut a straight miter to save its life..

I'm going to try to cut them with my track saw and see how that goes.

Sorry that you can’t catch a break! We have all been there, trust me. My issues are typically due to my ignorance not a tool, but getting discourage sucks.

I hope you are able to get it figured out.

Do you have any long clamps that you can join together? How about a couple of really long pipe clamps?

 

My issues are usually stupid mistakes, not sure what I am doing wrong here. Saw cuts laser straight on a 90 degree cut. Cust straight miters at 45 degrees on pieces about 10" long, but when I throw a 20" piece in there it dips in the middle of the cut. I think the tracksaw will do it fine, I have a good one. I just was so frustrated with the table saw as its a pretty decent machine and should do what I am asking it to do.

 

Is the throat plate flexing? Mine does that. Could need finger boards

I can cover the distance with clamps, it stopping the slide up as I close them. No square angles to grab.

 

Well I got the trim done today. Next is caulk and paint. I still need to reattach the electrical boxes on the inside. I got one up but I need to extend the wires for the second one. Then I need to make a workbench again.
I did my own thing with the trim. Not traditional but I like it.

 

I actually dig the 45 hanging off the bottom two sides. Looks kinda menacing! Don’t know a better way to describe it so don’t judge my choice of a descriptive word

 

I wonder if a sled would help in those situations.

 

Its a good thought but I've never been able to make an accurate sled, please see the post below from @dfanonymous explaining how I suck as a woodworker . Additionally the parts I'm cutting are bigger than I would prefer to use a sled with.

 

Tomorrow I tackle the bar top glue removal, and still trying to figure out the best approach to pull the corner together. A plan is appearing through the fog, so we'll see what develops.

I have figured out how I'm going to finish it. Marine grade varnish from Total Boat. Two step process with a varnish primer base and a satin varnish finish. The mistakes made will show, but does a nice job bringing out the grain and has UV protection. And it seems to have stabilized the live edge portion, although I haven't put any force to it.

The "red" side is the route I'm going. Other stuff was two other tests.

 

Well it's pretty much done. I still need to make a... headstone plate?... I don't know what to call it, but it will attach to the front side and have my dads name and such. I have it drawn up but my buddies laser engraver died so we weren't able to burn it last night. The top will be screwed down closed once we add his remains, and once my mother passes she will be added, and I'll make a new plate for both of them.

Won't lie, I've been hating on it almost the entire time I've been working on it. I'm a perfectionist and every time something didn't go the way I wanted it to I'd get frustrated and think it wasn't good enough for my dad, that he deserved so much better quality, but then my fiancé reminded me that NOTHING I build will be worthy of my dad in my eyes, and that he'd love it regardless.
