The only way someone should worry is if the recalled engines are manufactured in the same plant as the Tacoma motor.

But we do know the Tacoma is put together by a short-staffed underpaid workforce. Hence tall the QC issue Toyota is having right now.

Completely different engines. The issue with the 3.4 TT is a big stumble though. Right now Toyota is probably pouring over ways to NOT have to replace the complete engine. Might just end up with a new bottom end.

Seems a departure from their past philosophy to roll out basically brand new engines in several models at once(I know they were sort of in Lexus, but enough changes were made to call it new). Not to mention shrinking displacement and adding forced air.

I thought this engine had been around in Lexus models for some time and was somewhat proven. Perhaps some parts on the bottom end are reinforced for truck duty and are different form those other applications? The engine shrinking/forced air is reaction to ever-increasing emissions regulations. Toyota's head engineers even admit this.

No a Tacoma. Definitely doesn’t feel like a Toyota but I’m trying to be optimistic.

We see if Toyota does the right thing and drops a crate engine in. The cheaper route which customers and dealers don’t want is for the Tundra or LX tying up a service bay for weeks to get to the short block and hoping everything got put back together correctly.

This is a very interesting video that does a deep dive into the V35 engineering (and main bearing failures) in the Tundra. Ultimately the failures may be related to pushing too much torque through a one-piece cap bearing assembly . I guess this means its an indirect consequence of high boost combined with a design flaw (or machining debris if Toyota is to be believed). I suppose something similar could occur in the Tacoma but no evidence for it so far. The V35 engines were failing as early as 2018.

If I remember right it’s not on the V35A-FTS sold in the US - currently. There is talk it may be on 2026 or later MYs.

My son bought the new Tundra as soon as it came out he also got the recall notice. He loves that truck it has not had 1 issue since he bought it. He has drove back and forth up and down the eastern seaboard he’s military truck has been solid for him so take a deep breath and back away from your computer or at least the internet.

Just a point of engineering interest to most of us. Sucks for Tundra owners though as it will broadly affect resale for those first production years.

    I haven’t picked it up yet. I traded my 2020 for a 4Runner and I regret that

That's the first time I read anything about GPF on an existing gas ICE. I have heard that the particulate filters are making their way to gas engines. I was under the impression there was no GPF on current Tundras.

Like most, I continue to buy Toyotas specifically b/c I don’t like drama. I prefer a lively debate over seating position, and not basic quality lapses forcing recalls involving potentially blown motors. But, here we are.

Hopefully for all these new-gen owners, Toyota makes the conversations around here get a lot more boring, b/c as we see, many who don’t even like Toyotas just love stirring the pots.
