Cadillac Desert outlines a lot of the water issues for the area but I never realized how shady LA DWP was.

    https://apple.news/AvYSrQMsMRNW946vjk2c1Zg

Many folks are left with businesses they cannot sell and a financial burden of removal if they do walk away.

Interesting read if you’re fans of the area.

I wish I had a picture of the gas station sign from my first time passing through Bridgeport. 1977 or so. I think it was almost $1/gallon, when the rest of the state was more like $0.60. Of course those 1977 dollars would buy a lot less now. Oh, and Buster’s Market across the street from the gas station was still in business.

Now that you know the sleaze factor of the LAWP, watch the movie "Chinatown."

"It was inspired by the California water wars, a series of disputes over southern California water at the beginning of the 20th century, by which Los Angeles interests secured water rights in the Owens Valley."

It started with Mulholland and it hasn't stopped. He was one dirty son of a bitch. But he also built an empire.

I’ve seen Chinatown and read both of the Cadillac Desert books.

What Mulholland did was criminal. Mostly because he did his work in secret and to benefit the city of LA (indirectly). LAWP could easily have worked out a plan to divest properties to those holding leases vs going back almost 100 years to screw people. Imagine you’ve built a successful business. Along the way you’ve made improvements which you’ve been taxed for. Now, instead of selling for a million, you’re forced to liquidate for pennies on the dollar? Oh, and before you leave, remove the building and clean up everything else.

I’m guessing business owners in the article will take it in the shorts. Same with home owners.

I’m not sure what the City of San Francisco did and continues to do with Sierra water from Hetch Hetchy, and SF’s ownership of a huge amount of Bay Area watershed land, is much better than LA and Mulholland.

Most of it wasn't done under the cover of darkness and they didn't take more than they needed :D Crystal Springs is the terminus of the Hetch Hetchy pipeline.

Water is a pretty contentious issue. We're seeing a strong desire to build bigger reservoirs and knock down Hetch Hetchy Dam for example. But a larger reservoir means higher evap rate. HH reservoir is beautiful. Offers hiking and other recreational opportunities as well. Whether returning it to its supposed "Yosemite Valley Beauty" is good or bad, idk. I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze especially since wildlife has established itself there.

Transportation seems to the the reason. I’ve always wondered. But then I’m sure other supplies come from Reno which is less expensive from a transportation perspective. Can’t buy gas tho cause it’s not a California blend…

    Just the basics
Leave it better than you found it. Sadly this place had numerous shit tickets around. Guess everything should be closed.

So many places have no camping signs even though they're outside the border of the Alabama Hills map.

Unfortunately, we are coming ever closer to that. And perhaps not so much for the paper flowers.

An social media is a suck amplifier...

Bottom line, all the "expedition" and "van life" influencers out there are largely opportunistic scum, busily not so much "monetizing their lives" but "monetizing our public lands".
