You should be able to get a loaded Frontier for way less than $43k.

 

You would think. Talked to multiple dealers and all their "online" price all have some "gotcha", they apply every possible discount but when you do not qualify for these discounts, price goes up. Pretty much fully loaded Frontier (with every available package) is about $48.5k MSRP. They are discounting them about $5-6k below MSRP in the midwest.

 

or buy the cheapest 2wd KC and consider yourself lucky. It’s nice to upsize my fries for the next 10 years without guilt, either.

 

Depends on the trim of the Frontier you are looking at in my opinion. I have driven a handful of the new gen Frontiers and the couple lower trim levels I've been in and driven aren't great and feel underpowered. The transmission didn't ever seem to settle down and they sort of hunted for gears. The two PRO 4Xs I drove felt more powerful and didn't have the transmission hunt issues the SLs had. I'm assuming that may be a gearing difference between the trucks, but I'm not sure. Otherwise I think they are good trucks, ergonomics are set up well, they are comfortable, and like others have mentioned here the previous gen Frontiers were very solid and well built. I chose the new Tacoma for a number of reasons, one of which is gas mileage and I will say at altitude, the new Tacoma turbo 4cyl feels far stronger than the V6 in the Nissan. Reliability is yet to be seen on the Tacoma but so far so good and it seems to be better than the Tundra has fared so far (knock on wood) and I know that from experience

Side note, my SR5 with the premium package had a $46k MSRP and the dealer I bought it from took $5,500 off so there are deals to be had on the new Taco

 

Thats great news on the discount. About 12% off MSRP. I think that's the best deal I've heard of yet.

Dang, that's the exact truck I wanted (my biggest beef with Nissan, how they withhold that model from US) couldn't find one (I'm Seattle area too) and ended up with a Titan Pro-4x. Ooff!

 

I think I read they stopped making it in Canada as well. I think they only did 2022 and 2023 with them.

I had a 2022 ProX, drove it for 6 months with numerous problems. It left me stranded twice (towed to dealership both times). Ironically the last time it sat at the dealer for 3 weeks I drove a rental 2022 TRD OR. A couple months later I traded the ProX for a 2022 TRD OR and haven't regretted it since.

I'll hand it to Nissan the 310hp 8sp transmission combo is a good one. But the interior, electronic glitches, engine failures and ridiculous turning radius I can do without.

 

Sucks to hear that, sorry. I like the Nissan, but the interior is a bit too reminiscent of my old Xterra from almost 20 years ago.

If you hated the turning radius of the Frontier, keep your 3rd gen as long as you can though, the 4th gen Taco has a worse turning radius than the Frontier now.

 

Those of you considering the Frontier Pro4x may want to check out the Driving Sports TV and Sarah N Tuned reviews on YouTube. Both found some quirks with the off-road drive modes that really limited off road performance.

 

I think a lot of these 4th gen haters either: 1) have not even test-driven a 2024 Tacoma and are just hating change or 2) will buy a Frontier/Ranger and be back within a year or two.

I switched from a 2006 Tundra to a Ford F-150 and immediately regretted it. Yes, Nissan isn’t Ford but having driven a Frontier for a few weeks recently - they are very uncomfortable (hard stiff ride) and heavy steering.

I’m happy with the 2024 Tacoma’s 4 cyl turbo. It’s very responsive unlike the sluggish 6 cyl. Added headroom is nice too.

 

Go on a Tacoma forum and ask about buying a Nissan... Who does that?

You should absolutely buy the Nissan.

 

Just found TacomaWorld. Thought I would chime in here as I have had both trucks and maybe offer my opinion on each to help a prospective buyer; bought a '22 Frontier SV CCLB 4x4 in early 2023 with only 88 miles on it, and drove it for a little over a year and 3500 miles, but traded it for a '24 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed 4x4. I'll preface that I wanted a 6' bed so I am limited to Nissan or Toyota since Chevy/GMC/Ford/Honda only offer 5' beds now.

I liked the Nissan for the most part. I thought it looked okay (much better than the prior Frontier generation). Engine, and transmission seemed good. I really liked the Tow/Haul mode where it would aggressively downshift while slowing down with a trailer. I liked the straightforward interior layout and the cloth upholstery they chose for the seats, and the contrast stitching looked good IMO. The rear seat is small, but had room for a small adult's legs (even if they didn't have much overall legroom). I liked the metal bed with the factory spray in bed-liner. It also seemed quiet in the cab (much quieter than any truck I've had before), especially on the freeways/interstates. And I got a good deal on it!

So why did I trade it in? The biggest reason was something I couldn't change or fix: I strongly disliked the steering feel. It was 'heavy'. I'm no weakling, and I laugh at the 'eat your wheaties' comments I've seen on some other forums, but its one of those things where day by day I realized I didn't like the slow speed steering input. Yes, I test drove the truck before buying it, but a 25 minute drive doesn't tell you everything. I also see people talking about the steering feel being heavy because its still an older technology hydraulic system. Nope - ever drive a car or truck from the 70's or 80's. Those monstrosities were able to steer with a pinkie finger on the steering wheel. So its just something that Nissan chose. Additionally, the truck didn't have a good turning radius. So overall, the Nissan wasn't 'nimble' like I wanted from a midsize truck. I will admit, the steering feel is very much based on personal opinion. Some love it. I didn't - I wanted a lighter feel.

As for the turning radius, I saw in the spec sheets that the equivalent Tacoma should have a larger turning radius, but it sure doesn't drive like it that. I use my truck as a daily driver, and have to park everyday in a head in parking lot, and the Tacoma is easier to park than the Nissan. Not sure how turning radius is measured, so I can't back it up with numbers, but the Tacoma is easier to slow speed maneuver than the Nissan. Again, my opinion based on driving both trucks in the same manner every day.

There were also some options I missed out on with my Nissan that I found I wanted in the long run as well. In the Nissan, you cannot get their LED headlights with a 6' bed (Why Nissan???). There were other things too that my Frontier didn't have, so I made the trade for the Tacoma. I did get my Tacoma at just a couple hundred over invoice, so I feel like I did well enough with my purchase as well. Definitely would likely have done better if I had been more patient and waited longer, but I was ready for the change.

 

Hooray. Finally someone old enough to know that hydraulic steering can be as light or heavy as the manufacturer wants, the same as electric. Why Nissan chose it to feel like manual steering, I am clueless about. They should have just saved the money on the hydraulic system and left it manual. They're loosing lots of customers for that mistake. I would have had one a year or two ago were it not for that. As far as the "eat Wheaties" crowd, why? I want comfort when I drive. Why would I want to be aggravated by a manual steering feel when I pay a lot of money for a vehicle. Makes no sense at all. Maybe they should have manual brakes for the "eat Wheaties" crowd too since they like making things as tough as possible for no reason. You're right about the '70s cars. I used to drive my Grandmother's Chrysler land barges in the early 1970s. Yes, you could turn the steering wheel with a feather and the brakes you had to be careful on. About an ounce of pressure would lock them up. You would float down the road with the smooth suspension. These days on some cars you drive over an ant and your kidneys get damaged. I don't get the turn to ditching comfort in cars. It used to be a pleasure to drive.
