The camera worked fine and then it didn't.

The screen doesn't even switch to the camera mode, but the truck does the Manual "beep", and the reverse lights turn on.

Could this still be the reverse light switch causing everything but the camera to actuate?

Anyone recently work on your transmission? When my clutch got replaced, my reverse switch was broken. Took about a week for the new one to arrive and then about 30 mins for them to swap it out.

No, other than me swapping fluid a few months ago.

What were your symptoms of a bad switch?

The same as you describe. Put it in reverse and hear the beep and the backup lights turn on, just no camera. I crawled under my truck to investigate. Found the sensor and it had a broken wire.

Mine has no obvious wires pulled out on the sensor/switch itself, but for some reason the connection is now on top of the transmission instead of right at the back of the switch like in previous gens...wtf

What changed or what were you doing when it went from working to not working? Connections near the rear bumper all in tact?

I did install a dust light back in the rear bumper. I need to trace the wires back.

And I figured it out......The wiring harness going from the backup camera to the main harness got caught on something during an offroad trip immediately after installing the dust lamp and ripped apart. Luckily, it didn't damage the main wiring harness(about the halfway point of the back of the truck), but it did damage anything related to the camera. I was able to chase back on the bundle and find where the camera's wires are still intact, now I need to splice it back together......

Update, for those of you holding your breath for me to get this sorted out.....I redid the wiring and it was straightforward, being small gauge braided copper electrical wiring. It's weird that a video camera does not have a coaxial or AV-style cable to get a picture to the head unit, but that's Toyota for you.

Many brands use a similar 2-wire connection for video. Coaxial arrangement is really only for long distance noise rejection properties.

I'll throw a question your way then, the camera's wiring harness had Green, Red, Black, White, and a Blue wire. The truck's harness had everything but a blue, but did have an uninsulated bare wire....What is the bare wire in the harness for? I ended up just connecting it to blue and it all worked perfect on the first try....

@caribe makaira would need to confirm, but I thought the 5th wire was an additional ground for the tailgate itself
