So i recently picked up a 2012 sr5 with 55k miles. What is some initial maintenance that should be addressed or inspected soon? Nothing of concern that jumps out just trying to get some insight into some routine maintenance that could or should be done. Thanks

    Depends?
    What engine?

A good start would be plugs, transmission fluid, differential fluid, and transfer case fluid (if you have one).
Also grease the U-joints if applicable.

Might also look at hitting the frame with some rust preventative. I don't care where you live. Do it.
    These frames rust.

Welcome to TacomaWorld. What others said and I would suggest replacing the coolant. Open the oil fill cap a shine a good light in the filler tube. If the truck is a V6 it will give you a good view of the timing chain and surfaces and tell you a lot about how often the oil was changed. Ideally at this mileage you should see only a light golden sheen/color and no sludge on the surfaces if the oil and filter was changed was changed regularly.

I got a 2013 4 cylinder with 78K and just did trans fluid, plugs, serpentine belt, brakes (including new fluid), cleaned MAF sensor, coolant and power steering fluid. Did a drain and fill on rear diff (2wd truck) when I got it with 45K on it. Like someone said check over frame good, and exhaust since truck wasn't driven much. The tailpipe one mine was rusted but frame is clean.

Just be aware of a potential problem with the secondary air pump.
Mine failed a couple years back and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and truck goes into limp mode.
I don't think Toyota had an *official* recall, but they were aware of this problem on '12s and replaced mine at no cost.

I have a problem with the truck going into limp mode for a BS emissions item.
It's downright dangerous. Mine crapped out on an entrance ramp for the interstate.
1 minute later I would have been moving at highway speed. yep, downright dangerous.

+1 on the air pump. The original owner would have received essentially an extended warranty on that part (I did on my 2012).

There is a cheap and effective mod to replace the foam filter (that causes the issues) with a 1" Unifilter. Just google tacoma unifilter mod.

Yeah fluids were something I was definitely going to do, the only one I'm unsure about is transmission fluid. Heard differing views.
    Thanks for the response

Funny thing is that I put unifilters on the Taco and The FJ well before the failure.
The OEM foam is a pure crappy setup to begin with.
Neither of my foams disintegrated when I switched them.
Pump probably sucked in enough moisture over time to make the reeds fail.

A full fluid exchange ( not forced flush) at a trusted shop using WS toyota fluid (if a V6) would be ok at that mileage. Drain and fill also better than nothing but only gets out about 1/3 of it. Or you can leave it alone

The secondary air pump on my 2012 failed back in 2021 with maybe 90k on the clock. At the time Toyota was replacing failed pumps at no cost with a redesigned one under a TSB. Not sure if the TSB is still available or not.

You can create on account by going to https://www.toyota.com/connected-services/toyota-app/ to see if the pump on your truck has been replaced.

Keep in mind that the filter isn't the only reason for the pump failure, there are internal issues with the pump it's self. When mine failed the filter was 100% still intact.

There are multiple thread on TW discussing this. The TW search function is not that great so try searching Google with "secondary air pump Tacoma World and you will see multiple threads on the topic.

Nothing to worry about a 55K.
You have more to worry about if you DO NOT change it.

I did my first drain and fill at 100k. No issues.
Then another at 150K....Still no issues.

Don't wait. Do it now. (Don't be like me)

I'd go with Valvoline MaxLife over WS.
    MaxLife is a better fluid.

The temporary fix is to delete the stupid foam filter and run a uni-filter.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2012-secondary-air-injection-system-sais-recall.729514/

The permanent fix, (while it is still available) is to delete the SAIS.
    https://hewitt-tech.com/product/secondary-air-injection-system-bypass-kit-gen-2-plug-play/

I'd think about ordering a delete kit, just incase.
You could just buy block off plates, and hope you find a tuner willing to turn off the CEL/Limp mode function of the SAIS.
But that's easier said than done. EPA is cracking down HARD......

Read more about that process here.

So I created an account and checked the maintenance history and found one that says replaced air pump. Not sure if that is the fix but I will look into it.

The "action" was to replace it if it failed; they didn't really address the root cause as far as I know.

So even if the pump has been replaced, I'd still do the Unifilter mod.
