Tacoma Hybrid is a joke

I disagree, I still blame the general public. Bigger is better, right? I mean look, Jeep just launched two giant SUVs (Wagoneer family), that cost exorbitant amounts of money, and I see plenty on the road now. The chicken tax did not make Jeep manufacture these cars; a market analysis drove them to that decision.

It's also partly an arms race: I'd be perfectly happy driving a sedan, but I wouldn't be happy driving a sedan around all the tall trucks and SUVs due to visibility issues, so my second car is also an SUV (granted, it's a smaller much more fuel efficient one). But my wife has stated a few times she'd never own another sedan for that reason.

 

The exact same people that 25 years ago said these were killing the Earth and killing passengers of small cars are now claiming they are saving the Earth by driving these and killing passengers of small cars…

Yeah, I don't do that. I'm all for making trucks LIGHTER than OE, not strapping a bunch of chinese welded garbage to the truck.

I correctly called the 4G real-world fuel economy months before we had user data, based only on the weight increase of the 4G vs 3G. Whatever savings could have been realized with the new engine and transmission were devoured by the extra curb weight.

 

The arms race is directly a result of the proliferation of bigger vehicles because of chicken taxes and section 179s

 

Section 179 was modified in 2020; but I agree that the chicken tax effect still applies.

 

The effect still lingers even if 179 is modified. Because it’s now social pressure to have big vehicles.

Every popular electric vehicle on sale in the US is substantially heavier than the average full-sized SUV. I’m not including things like the Bolt and the Leaf because nobody’s buying those.

This was touted as a huge risk to pedestrians and occupants of regular cars 25 years ago, suddenly all of this has been memory holed because these cars are supposed to save the world.

The Hummer is just an egregious example, the cybertruck is worse with its sharp angles.

 

I gotta say I don't really understand your outrage at electric cars and trucks. It's just another option for those who choose to buy them. Just relax man you're going to be able to buy ICE vehicles for a long time in the future. No one is forcing you to do anything.

 

The Bolt is the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the US in 2023, years before in 2020 the Leaf was the top selling non Tesla EV.

 

Wow look at all these people that are suddenly concerned about vehicle weight, carbon footprints and resource extraction.

They got smoked off a stoplight by a Tesla, went home and became EV/battery experts overnight

 

The people making these arguments are at best clueless and at worst disingenuous assholes spreading misinformation.

 

Adding to that, Teslas are consistently rated as the top cars on the road for occupant safety. And (outside of the Cybertruck because it's a stupid vehicle) they pass all European pedestrian safety impact requirements. Dude's just making shit up and getting upset that the mob isn't blindly agreeing with him.

Also, the average BOF Truck/SUV is around 4500-5000lbs. That's pretty much the range that the Model S and it's variants weigh in at. So there's outrage against the electric cars, but not against the ever-increasing size of SUVs and trucks in America? Give me a break.

For Christ's sake, a BMW M3 now weighs more than 2 tons. Everything has gotten gigantic. Why are they only ever upset about the electric cars!?
