Blind shock tests

Such cool videos, thanks for putting all the time and effort into them! Can't wait to see the deep dive videos, and especially the mid budget series to see how the TRD IBP's stack up to others!

 

The hobby needs more reviews like this that take any brand bias out of the equation. I will be really curious to see the next series as it's the range I'm typically shopping. Almost went 6112's the other week but everything I read the valving style wasn't ideal for my use but perhaps that's all wrong?

 

Dobi mrr which are 3 way adjustable are going to be compared to shocks with no adjustment? The mrr is more compared to kings with adjusters

 

Having adjusters doesn't necessarily make a good shock. Dobinsons are in a weird price bracket between the higher end 2.5's, but we had already tested those the year before, so we decided to test them in this series

 

Bilstein 5100's are quite impressive for their price. I kind of wish I saved the difference and bought the 6112/5160 combo over the fox elite 2.5's. Although, I have yet to install them, so I can't give any feedback on fox elite ride quality.

 

You tested the IMS or the MRR last year? Was the test posted in a review somewhere you could point me to? Thanks!

 

fwiw i had the 6112/5160 combo and my Accutuned Fox 2.5s ride so much better.

 

@WormSquirts watched last night! Well done, you had me cracking up quite a bit. I also had a chance to chat with Ian at Overland Expo West about our new shocks. Maybe we can toss those in the mix soon. Keep up the good work!

 

That is a good "stage 2" type of line up. The MT64 would be really ideal to get a hold of.

I know that you just did the IMS, but I feel like the IMS is a better comparison than the MRR. Because of the adjustability, the MRR should have been grouped with the 8112, King 2.5, Fox 2.5 and the other ones out there that have adjustability in the shock.

I am super curious of the comparison between the Foam Cell and the 6112. I have the Foam Cell, I have done a lot of Foamcell and 6112 installs as well, and I am thinking that the 6112 is actually a little nicer for ride quality.

Unfortunately, the lightest Foamcell spring is 720LB and then they have 2 others that are in the 800LB range. The 6112 has the options of 600,650,700 so again, I think it actually performs a little better overall. I am chomping at the bit to see a comparison.

I think its also important to have the same front lift height and to measure down travel for each set up too.

 

The tests are already shot, so unfortunately they are what they are at this point, but measuring travel would have been a great idea. Just hard when we can't see what we are testing! Could have got the guys swapping shocks to do it though. Next time!

That said, all the shocks were set up as close to their advertised 2" positions as possible.

We can always do the dobinsons mrr again against higher level shocks, but their IMS were noticeably worse than 5100s so I feel like the performance is in line.

I knew that the mid budget series was going to the one most people wanted to see, so I wanted to experiment with the budget series first as far as what people liked/didn't like and ways we could improve it, as well as the thumbnail/title/all the youtube stuff to make a successful video. Then we could try to apply as much of that to the mid budget as possible and give it it's best chance.

so far I've learned that I need to specify what coils are on each shock lol. I thought it would be obvious, but I guess not.

honestly though, if you guys want more questions answered or tested, I'm always open to ideas (not just regarding shock value) and the absolute best way to help us make more videos is pretty easy: like, subscribe, comment and watch the videos all the way through (if it's good enough to earn your time!)

Definitely appreciate all the feedback on this series, as well as the one from last year. Always aiming to improve. I know that a lot of you guys just want the info without the "gameshow" stuff, but it's just not interesting enough for the majority of people who need a story to keep them hooked. plus it was just fun for us haha

 

Keep having fun with the format. It's worth a good laugh, far to many people take themselves way to seriously these days.

 

I found it informative and enjoyed the game show spin. In fact I’d say lean into the game show theme and keep a list of the shock numbers and names on the screen while you show each clip. In clips you often would say stuff like “that was way harsher than shock 2” but I can’t remember what each shock number is. Especially with the 6 shocks tested in 3 segments I think it makes it easier to follow. But overall great series, looking forward to the deep dives I to each shock and the mid budget series.

 

At each ranking there's a constant scroll at the bottom of the screen listing which model lined up to which number
