Anyone seen this pop up? My buddy has a Tundra and was telling me about it. Hope they don’t include the Tacoma!

If I remember correctly, the failure is in the main bearings. From the pictures on tundras.com, it looks like they are doing a complete rebuild of the entire engine.

Yea 3.4s are spinning bearings, its not super common, but definitely unheard of for Toyota.

It will be wild if we have to pull these engines based on production dates.

What the labor hours on that?
I seen a ticket where 32.1hrs was stated as a short block R&R.
But that seems too high for warranty work?

It's about right, its a crazy amount of work. I wish we had the ability to cab off at my shop, I'd probably go that route.

Toyota is standing by the product, so even though its a hiccup, it speaks to the brand.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Hyundai/Kia had something similar years ago for their early Theta 2. They claimed debris gets lodged in oil passages and over time, starves bearings of oil. Hard to tell if all the failures on that engine were caused by this but bottom line with that engine is it is a shitty design. They did throw in a lifetime remanufactured short block replacement. Some of replacement engines have had failures with those now.

Sounds like Toyota may know a bit better which engines made could be affected. I don't see Toyotas issues being as pervasive. Anyway, it's not about finding debris in oil changes. It's about debris getting stuck in passages and causing failure (eventually).

Yeah I saw good ol Scotty Kilmer ranting about it  issue is that the damage has already been done in those engines, so flushing the oil won’t really help. It’ll be interesting to see what Toyota does because replacing/rebuilding 100,000 engines is probably out of the question

My old shop has had two the past 5 months.
    Ungodly amount of work.
I don’t know what they’re getting for time but I do know the guy was into it for the whole time and he was still assembling the motor. Extremely tedious.
Yes, spun bearings. I didn’t flip the block to look but you would think the motor is the size of a Cummings until you take everything off and it’s the size of a foot stool.
I wonder if a 5.7 retrofit will be available.. lol.

I’m curious about this as well. Wasn’t the 3.5 tacoma engine built in the same factory in Alabama along side the 3.4 tundra engine? I imagine it would have to affect tacoma engines too. You would think the blocks, etc would be cleaned out by the same machine and process

With enough money, there is always room for a LS swap..
