This is not reality at all. My 21 auto got 18mpg and my 22 manual gets 17. They are pretty darn close in real life... the 3.5 is DEAD below 2200rpm so the slightly higher gear ratio is perfectly complementary to the truck, where you can drive in 6th gear on the freeway, uphill etc. It is far better to drive than the automatic...
I have no issues with the 1st gear it is completely normal as well...

    I’m getting 18.5 so far (~850 miles).

Thanks for sharing your findings, picking up my 6MT Sport this week.

Have you tried any 2nd gear starts from a stop?

Is the hill assist working well for you?

    Are you using iMT?

Just did 20+ stop & starts in 2nd through town - went very smoothly.

Haven’t used/needed iMT yet, but hill assist was very useful after parking on an incline iN SF.

Don’t know where that came from, but Aisin builds the transmissions and they make them in a few different locations based on what vehicle they are intended for. BMW has nothing to do with it.

I am having the same issue, just started today and no other issues shifting before. Do you have an update on a fix? Hoping Toyota can tow it in tomorrow morning.

    This is worrying.

What is your sale date and mileage?

You just suddenly don't have 2nd gear? What happens when you shift to 2nd?

I ordered in December. It was built in February. Delivered 2 weeks ago. I'm just over 1k miles now. Trying to go to 2nd it is like the I just can't get the shift to engage...same thing at 4th and 6th. Happened when I was downshifting to make a right hand turn at about 12 miles an hour. Goes into 1st, 3rd, 5th, and R with no issues.

    Any new noises?

So it's totally locked out of those gears or is it unreliable in that it is hard to make it engage? Obviously I recognize you do not want to impede traffic to test it out again but just wondering how something can just go out like this out of the blue at such low mileage.

It is like it just won't go far enough to actually engage the gear...and it will "grind" like missing the gear (especially in 2nd)...at higher speed I was able to sort of "force" it into 4th and 6th trying to get home. Like someone said in an earlier post on this thread it seems like the extension they used just isn't allowing it to get into the even gears.

It doesn't seem like an actual transmission issue...sounds like there is a problem with the clutch or shifter engagement. At least that's how it feels.

It doesn't seem like Toyota dealers actually employ any mechanics who can diagnose and fix specific components or they otherwise have so little trust in their own techs that they feel it is better to just replace the entire transmission over something like this.

The worry I have is the backorder time and how long it apparently takes to get a new transmission in... months? Might as well be waiting for a new truck to arrive. Not sure if they offered OP a complimentary loaner but if they didn't and told them to take the bus while their $50K truck collects dust at the back of the dealership lot then this isn't the image people think about when they decide to get a new Toyota vehicle. Seems like Tundra owners have been getting hammered with stuff like this over the past couple years.

Just frustrating...it was working just fine until today. Drove from VB to DC last week with no issues, even got 23 mpg with the improved 6th gear and intelligent cruise control

So weird how it works and just stops “reaching” for lack of a better description. Not that I’ve experienced it but from the few accounts of this. I wonder what changes. I still think it is extension housing related but no clue what changes to make it go from work to not work.

BLtheP, that is exactly what it feels like. Like you can feel going into the odd gears it slides into place...the even gears it feels like it's being blocked or just not reaching

This is exactly what happened to mine. No previous symptoms then all of a sudden the shifter couldn’t reach 2,4,6. I would have also thought it was a shifter/linkage issue but they are saying entire transmission needs replaced. They say there are many many with our problem awaiting a replacement transmission.

bad news is they keep adding weeks the latest is now mid July. I am not happy. Very pissed at toyota customer service.
