RSI Smart Cap

A dumb question…. 2019 short bed with an EVOA cap.

- the box of parts includes a small roll of flat foam gasket. There is nothing in the install instructions about this. Where is this supposed to go?

Or is this just extra in case you damage some of the factory installed foam gaskets when attaching all the panels together?

Just did my install two weeks back. That foam is for the portion of the bed against the cab. If that is lower than the sides, you use that foam to build up the lower portion to be level. I didn't use it (or the thin pads under the caps for that matter).

You need to use the other pads to space the cap up so that the bulb seal along the bottom isn't crushed.
I didn't need the flat foam to build up along the front but I did use pieces to close up the gap at the front corners.

 

You are correct... The thick ones are necessary... I should have explicitly stated the skinny thin ones (that go under the bed caps).

Make sure you check the covered nuts on the inside of the latches also. Found parts in the bed I did not know what they came off of. Finally discovered last night and now need to get another nut as I only found one.

 

I replaced those stupid caps with dome nuts, because the plastic caps kept falling off. Be sure to loctite them, or they'll back off too.

 

Hmm, loctite is definitely a good idea. May need to swap them out if I see just the plastic falling off also. Thanks for the suggestions!

 

Super happy with my purchase! I've resisted having a topper, but finally caved. Then, as I researched, I found the SmartCap and immediately regretted my propensity to only buy obviously high quality things ;-).






Has anyone attempted to mount recovery boards (maxtrax in my case) to the side panels? Dimensionally they will fit and the stainless seems plenty stout. The hinges and dampers seem more than capable. I am considering using rivnuts.

Thoughts?

 

I’m having the same problem. Luckily, each time the nut and washer has fallen in the bed, but it’s a matter of time before I lose it.

May have to try a split lock washer.

 

Lost a couple of mine as well. What size dome nuts did you go with? I need to do the same.

 

I don't remember the size, I just pulled one of the nuts and brought it into the hardware store.

 

I don't have a solid day however, we did get sku's and pricing for the new latches. The wait looks to be coming close to the end.

Has anyone come up with a good way of getting between the cab and cap to clean the windows? Originally I thought I had enough room to snake my arm in through the slider window but no dice.

My thought is to use a bottle brush. We'll see how good it goes when I get around to trying it out.
