I took a year to get ready for retirement, then a month after I retired, my son quit his job and my wife got laid off.

And yet it all is working out. I am at the end of a 3 week stay at the villa. Got a lot done but took my time to relax and life will go on. I was offered a job as an analyst, setting up print servers. But I said no...for now.

It's like having kids, there is never a good time, you just do it and deal with it, part of the fun.

Glad things have worked out Andy! Seems like it does for most people that is a common theme.

I'm still thinking 70 for me. Taking the day off tomorrow and go break some clays getting ready for a shoot this weekend. All my friends are retired except for one that I work with and he is 69 and going until 70 so a year out, retired Navy also. Depends on how I feel but I might end up carrying his seabag for him, and mine as well.

What Andy said there is really true.

There is never a "good" time to do it. & There will never be enough money.

YET after I retired the sun still came up every day & all the bills are still paid.
The animals are spoiled rotten & so are we.

    Notes:
    1. my wife is 10 years younger than me & only 20yrs into her career... She has got to work a while for sure to get her retirement. She could quit now if she hadn't been so financially irresponsible.... But she was & she cant.

2, There will always be the next problem & things to do around a home. It NEVER ends.

I'm ready. My bones rattle, snap and pop at every turn. I can't hardly drive my work truck (rough riding dually) without knocking my back or neck out. And I'm mentally exhausted. We've made a ton of good change and have set up whoever comes behind me well so they can run on autopilot and do the projects I've preloaded until they get their bearings. I've put together a "continuity book" full of info that will carry them for a long time. I don't have a problem leaving. I have a good combination of retirement income that should pretty well click into place when I exit. Just a few things to wrap up. And the timing is pretty good. Being the oldest in the office I see a lot of 20-somethings throughout the district that bring new ideas and change that I just don't want to go through. My business is going to be my retirement activity. Something to keep me busy and some play money.

There's supposed to be 3 of us out the door about the same time, but the other two are talking about hanging around longer and they're still young enough to do it (mid-50's).

One of the big things I admire about guys like you is you have great hobbies and you figured how to relax. I know what I want to do it's just getting into it and finding the places. I have a couple locations to get me started but I want to find a few more for variety.

My wife is 6 years younger and probably 6-10 years behind me. So between us we'll do ok. I take problems as they come and yet one step behind on getting to the next...typical (except my ac unit. You can't survive without ac in the desert so it sees the most attention). I got to do some pretty cool shit along the way. I don't feel like I'm leaving anything undone other than dropping my keys and credentials on my desk on the way out the door. I just gotta mark time, straighten up a few papers and add a few minor touches. I'm satisfied.

Good morning folks. Retirement has not worked for me well. Four checks a month and I'm back at it again. I just like to work.
Y'all be safe and remember those who gave it all on D Day.
