Will Tacoma's suffer the same engine failure fate as the Tundra?

IDK, I have a 2023 Tundra and Toyota has declared the engine problem to be a safety recall. While there is no remedy yet, I don't see how they are going to get out of that box without replacing a shitload of engines. I can't see how any sort of inspection or flush can guarantee that a given motor doesn't have a problem. And since they made it a safety issue (engine locking up, losing brakes, steering, etc.) there is no way a free extended warranty will ever satisfy regulators. The consensus over in the Tundra forum is that it is gonna get ugly.

The 3rd gen Tundra was ugly and underwhelming BEFORE the engine debacle. It may never recover its market share.

think about it really well. I'm now regretting trading my 23, missing the V6. No real big issues with my 24, only issue I keep encountering is the key not detected.

 

Feel free to PM me your thoughts. I have had like 4 deals put together and flake everytime. I do think its interesting though the last two deals were buyers who flaked on their allocation / deposit, which means people can't afford them or are getting cold feet.

I'm sure there are plenty of Tundra owners recanting similar prior statements and wanting that 5.7L NA back.

 

I've owned 4 third gens and have enjoyed them. I like my 24, but not in love with it. I'm probably going to jump to an FJ or a 2.5 gen Tacoma if everything works out tomorrow. I don't plan on getting a 3.5, going for the 4.0.

Every truck, or every vehicle really, has a flaw of some sort. Some of the 3rd gen Tacoma 3.5 has issues with leaky valves. Some early 2nd gen Tacoma 4.0s has head gasket issues. Some of the 5.7 Tundras back at 2007 suffered from camshaft failures.

Nothing wrong with turbo motors as long they are designed properly. Chevy's 2.7 L Silverado motor is supposed to be fantastic. Hopefully Toyota's offering here for the 4th gen will be as good. I'd swap my Tundy for a 4th gen Tacoma in a heartbeat, except for that 18 gal fuel tank, which is absurd and unacceptable. I am addicted to the Tundra's ~600 mile range with its 32 gal tank and can't see going that far backwards. IMO Tacoma should get a 25 gallon tank option. Yes, this issue is THAT big a deal for me.

The only problem with my Tundra's 600 mile range is that the engine may explode halfway through that. LOL.

 

LOL, yes. But some are normal solid BMs and others are hot steaming piles of diarrhea.

 

I don't mind stopping for gas, and I don't usually drive long distances but the larger fuel tanks are much better. 36 gallon tanks are now standard on F-150.

 

I have an 01 PreRunner with 217k, I am the original owner and was waiting on the 24 to get a new truck and keep my PreR. I test drove a 2023 TRD sport and a 2024 4x4 SR5. I like both, I like the looks of the 24 interiors slightly more. I really want a 23 Limited under 10k mile 4x4 6'bed in Blk. Since they are incredibly hard to find and over priced I am open to other 23's and 24s. As far as the 24 engine the local yota dealer said its the same engine that has been in highlanders for yrs with no issue. Didnt bother to look it up...but if so that gives me a little peace of mine.

 

Rah. Everyone is out there complaining about the new prices, but ignoring the fact that Gen 3s are also incredibly expensive.

I found Tinkerer's Adventure did a pretty unique discussion on Toyota's engineering with their Chief Engineer. Their study in SAE International claims to achieve both high specific power (performance) and high thermal efficiency (lower wear/tear).

 

The 3.5 is the new 4.0
