if you're into history and nature, the historic plantations and gardens are beautiful. Magnolia and Middleton plantations specifically. about 25 minutes from downtown. further if you're coming from Mt. Pleasant.

if you're a beer drinker, there are absolutely shitloads of breweries (like any other city), and none are bad. some have nice marsh/water views, others are more urban with rooftop terraces. there's a good german one, ect. firefly distillery is also a good time, and right across the road from holy city brewery which is a nice place to hang out.

if you're ok with a bit more of a drive, driftwood beach on edisto is about a 45 minute drive south, and absolutely magical to explore.

it's super touristy, but the carriage tours are great. we enjoy taking visitors on them, and sometimes learn a thing our two ourselves. the guides have to study for and pass a pretty extensive historic knowledge test. it's a very relaxing experience and the guides field questions well. there are 7(I think) routes that the tours can take, and they are picked at random at the start of the tour, so you don't know where you're going when you book.

Been in a few small planes flying up and down the coast and worked parasail boats up in Murrells for a few years and yea, sharks and rays are swimming in and out of people all day everyday. People have no idea.

Hit bowens island for dinner one night. It’s a good view and there’s a short dock you can wander. Then you’re just a short drive from folly to walk around or do the pier.

I also hear LOLOs just before you get to folly is good, but never been there myself

    Food wise my favorites were
Halls Chophouse (a bit pricey but get the bison fillet)
Reds on Shem Creek is amazing for people watching on the weekend.
Fleet Landing used to be one of my wife's favorites

If you go to North Charleston, check out the Cod Father for their amazing fish and chips.

as far as harbors go, charleston is pretty open and unprotected, mix that with the reasonably heavy traffic on the rivers, and pontoons get wrecked pretty quick around here. i really don't do any aluminum work, but people still get my name for aluminum welding somehow, and most of those folks have a pontoon boats that got brackets getting ripped off of the hulls. different than most of the carolina's ICW, where pontoons seem to do pretty well.

unpopular opinion: Halls certainly has the steak selection, but there are about 10 better steaks in downtown Charleston.

Halls is also our favorite. Not an everyday type of place, but worth it a couple times a year.

I also hear cod father doesn’t disappoint.

Any in particular that you prefer? We stick to halls because it’s what we know. Oh and the skillet corn.

That's fair. It would take a long time to hit every good food place in Charleston. We liked the food and were always treated well there so we continued to go occasionally for special occasions. My favorite was getting a box of fried chicken from publix and some glass bottle coke... Then run the boat out to Kiawah Island for a picnic. Especially during the week when not many people were out. Warm sunset runs back to Limehouse wide open while the kids napped and the wife and I jammed out to some good tunes is far better than any restaurant.

again, you're not going to get the choices, likely only one or two steak options to choose from, but it's intentional, and they're fantastic.

    in no specific order:
    -Circa 1886
    -Church and union
    -Charleston Grill
    -High Cotton
    -Grill 225
    -Anson
    -FIG
    -Peninsula Grill

I'm going to put Zero George in the running too, but that's on a completely different plane. if charleston were able to have Michelin star restaurants, it would be the first one with the award. it's also on a completely different cost level however. with wine, its a $400-600 evening for two.

We probably crossed paths a few times. That was our landing too. Spent a lot of time coming and going from there.

BBQ Guru will make it easy. Load up lump charcoal, light the middle, let the blower do the rest.

I 2nd Edisto island. I love that place. Also a little more south of Charleston is beaufort sc. They use to have a drift wood beach on hunting island. Also one of my favorites. But they cleared it and pushed all the trees away so the beach was easier to maintain.

That must have been done in the past few years. We were there 4 years ago and it was still a boneyard of trees

The last time I was there was a little over a year ago. It was disappointing to drive all the way there and see that. I use to love camping at that campground and be right beside the ocean. I have sained there and got a handful of shrimp for dinner. Also seen that bioluminecent blue glowing algae in the water off of that beach. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Probably another unpopular opinion at least among tourists, Fleet Landing is better than Sanitary

Yea we’ve camped there a few times too and loved the boneyard. Lighthouse is shut down for repairs too. Found that out after driving there with the kid one day to take her to the top.
