Anyone reach high miles on 2TR fe using 0w20 oil?

145k nothing but mobil 1 0w20

 

Just passed 140k on Penzoil 0-20wt. Mileage is great and runs like a top.

 

I corresponded with this 880,000 mile owner and he told me he used Castrol synthetic blend 5W-20: https://www.motor1.com/news/518768/toyota-tacoma-million-half-miles/. At 880,000 the cylinder head gasket failed so he had a used 2TR-FE engine from a wrecking yard installed that had about 100,000 and he drove that one another 600,000. Then he developed a terminal cancer and died.

 

What were his oil change intervals? Did you ask him about his other maintenance?

 

10,000 change intervals worked for him because he was doing highway driving 95% of the time. He was not good about other engine maintenance; e.g. stretched spark plug changes far beyond 120,000. Such a shame that even though his Tacoma lasted forever, his skinny and fit body didn't as he succumbed to an undisclosed, fast developing cancer of some kind a few years ago.

 

It’s awesome he replied to you, based on the videos he seemed like a really down to earth good dude. I know he hauled nuclear medicine for cancer patients I wonder if that played a role in his cancer. Was his transmission original and an auto or 5 speed? (I don’t recall from the videos)

Edit nm read the article says his auto trans lasted 1.3 million miles pretty damn impressive especially for an auto

 

It was a 4 speed A340E transmission - super tough transmission also used in larger V6 vehicles like the T100 pickup, 4Runner and 1990 V8 Lexus LS400. He didn't do the first tranny oil change until about 450,000 miles because he didn't know it should be changed occasionally.

 

isn't his truck on display at dealer now in Raleigh? I may need to make a drive down to see it. I have the same spec truck but a 2013 (and much less miles @ 80k). Very impressive he got that much service out of that relatively inexpensive truck.

 

Just hit 300k using 0w20 and changing oil religiously every 3000 miles. For a stint I did use 0w40 but switched back. This is also with a Rotrex supercharger on the motor from 100k and on.
