(I am not mechanically inclined, I know the basic stuff) So I have a 2012 Tacoma with around 185k miles. Around a year ago my check engine light came on and after awhile it started shifting rough and eventually I couldn’t go over 65. Took it to the shop and they said it was some “air stuff” part and it was a recall so they replaced whatever it was for free basically. Then 8 months later, about a month it does the same thing so I take it back to the same shop and they said it was probably a faulty part and they will order a new one and replace it so they did and it cost me close to $700 to “fix” it. Well…. It did it again prolly 2 weeks ago so I took it back to them and they said they found the actual issue this time and it was a different part they needed so they ordered the new part and replaced it. I picked it up yesterday got in it and drove it home seemed just fine….. get in it last night to go eat, same thing engine light came on…any tips or anyone had similar issues?

    welcome!

the way i see it, you've really got three options, well 4 if we count burning the truck in front of the shop while dancing around it in your underwear. but lets leave that as an absolute last resort.

    a. take it back to them, seek a price reduction because the problem isn't fixed. they should cover at least part of the final cost as warranty work-- it's part of the reason to keep going to the same reputable shop.
    b. take it to a different shop, and hope for a better outcome.

    c. if you're looking for us to try to help diagnose it, we'll need to know what kind of shop you brought it to, what parts were replaced, and what code was setting off the check engine light. many auto parts stores will read the check engine codes for free, many will also offer you a printout of the check engine code, as well as possible diagnosis.

It’s all air system and air intake. The part they replaced was one of the sensors. I can go more in depth on the code readings later today

shifting rough, and limiting the speed really sounds more like a transmission issue, in either the transmission itself, or the computer logic that runs it.

typically 'air stuff' issues can have drivability issues, but would result in rough rpm/idle, or the engine having trouble staying on, and that would be repeatable at different speeds, not limit any particular speed.
