Dealship quoting $700+ for sparkplug replacement

Why in the world would they be charging this much, i haven't asked yet, nor have I agreed to doing it ...i am thinking they might be doing a coil replacement too? all they've mentioned is spark plug replacement.

what do you guys think?

But that same plug 9010 REC10WMPB states to have a .041" (1.05mm) gap...this is not what toyota recommends via the manual.

Would these be OK to use still?

Toyota recommends the gap @ .031 in .8mm
I have a gap set for .031 or .032 in.....can i use this? or should it be exact

 

It's 3 hours for some reason book time. Many dealers including mine agreed to drop it to 2 or less.

Even with removal of the upper manifold it still only takes me an under an hour.

You're almost better doing it yourself watching youtube or going independent thats reputable.

Do you remove the manifold just to make it a bit easier? There was a lot of “stuff” on the left side but I didn’t find it too bad with the manifold in place. Just curious.

 

I'm almost 40 and sometimes I hate struggling with simple things. I can blast off the manifold in 5 minutes, or struggle with the coils and fuel lines. I'm not a slow tech by any means.

Sometimes the long way is the easy way.

I never took it off for 2nd gens, but I've started to do it for 3rd. Plus it makes it easier to clean the throttle plate.

I get it, and figured as much. I did the same when I changed out my clutch pedal by removing the body ECU so I didn’t have to lay on the floor. Just didn’t see the need to remove the manifold for mine but of course I don’t deal with it every day. If I could get it off in 5 minutes then I’d do the same.

Probably a good idea for me to remove mine next time to check things out.

 

Buy OEM plugs, not Amazon specials. 90919-01263.

 

Or if not the Toyota part number, you can search using the Denso or NGK part numbers (they are in the manual).

 

only buy OEM spark plugs and coil packs. Both Denso or NGK are spelled out in your manual.
Let me say it again, OEM (Denso or NGK) ONLY.

 

Go to another dealer if u don’t want to do it yourself .. mine charges under 300 to do it .

 

Search online and buy the OEM Denso or NGK plugs from a dealer in your area. They have a free shipping promotion going on currently or free pickup at dealership near you. You can easily find them for as little $4-5 each. https://autoparts.toyota.com.

 

OP if you are going to do your own plug job or buy them yourself, like others I will strongly advise to purchase NGK or Denso plugs ONLY and absolutely DO NOT buy them on Amazon. Either dealer or parts store but please for all that is holy don't buy plugs on amazon lol.

 

Get OEM plugs, dielectric grease and DIY.
I did mine a few weeks ago and took my time.

You do not need to remove the manifold at all.

There are a lot of vids out there and I found the easiest one to follow was that chick Chloe kuo. Many other vids get lost in the weeds.

The pass side is easy, open the air box for the front one.
The driver isn’t s big deal, you just loosen the two brackets and swing out of the way.

Just go to an independent garage you can trust. No need to go to the stealership after the warranty.

 

Are those tri-tipped plugs that you bought? The image on the Amazon listing shows a single-tip plug.

I would return those plugs and get the OEM. Denso FK20HBR8 = Toyota Part# 90919-01263.

Do the service yourself it is easy.

The little wife has decided we need to lay new flooring ( Lifeproof Trail Oak ) and this weekend we started.
Move furniture, rip out old baseboards, lay flooring, cut and install new baseboard, paint baseboard, put furniture back...
Rinse and repeat.

But whining aside, OP should find a good/reputable ( keywords=good/reputable ) independent shop and have them do it.

I long for the days when I could pop a hood and immediately determine where and how many plugs there were...
But that ship has sailed.

 

I just did mine for the first time ever this past weekend and they really weren’t that bad and I was quoted 800 for the dealership to do it but they also were going to charge me 38 bucks a spark plug plus labor.
