Definitely giving it a try. Does zucchini store well? We may not have time during the week to make it. Got them in the fridge at the moment. I know sometimes cucumbers will wilt within 2 days

 

You can shred it and freeze it, put it in ziploc

 

We also slice zucchinis and freeze them, last long enough till the next harvest. Wife makes the best Italian chicken with zucchinis and Italian dressing.

 

Not gonna lie, I've always been a picky eater, so introducing veggies into my diet is only something I've taken up within the past few years; but that being said, if you've never grilled zucchini, give it a try! Basically just cut them into slices/planks, coat in olive oil, season generously (salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, whatever else you like), and cook on a medium heat for a nice char. Spruce it up even more by dipping in ranch or teriyaki sauce!

 

We do yellow squash grilled too, with the zucchini. Can do same in oven baked or pan sautéed. And while we are talking about cooking, if you haven’t tried okra halved lengthwise, olive oil/salt/pepper baked in the oven then you ain’t lived.

Have tried freezing squash and zucchini but it always ends up rubbery. Wife made some squash & zucchini casseroles from a friends recipe, pre made in foil pans with cracker meal etc. Freezer to oven. Were fairly good but still not as good as fresh imo. So, I plant plants early and seed at same time to lengthen out yield. And give a lot away.

 

i like grilling zucchini and squash, but I've never thought to try growing it.

i'll have to try them next season. might even try them for a fall crop.

i'm having issues with pollinators though. they don't seem to be present. i've been hand pollinating my whole garden and its been abysmal. i did notice since the start that i have tiny black ants that are always in the center of the flowers. can this be the problem? are they robbing the pollen before anything can pollinate the flowers? i always left them alone because i thought they were beneficial, but now I'm beginning to wonder.

That’s right and when it starts coming in you can’t pick and eat it fast enough. If it’s 6” long it will be over 12” tomorrow and ready to pick. You miss a day and you’ll have green logs.

Might look into planting some honey bee flowers. Typically they are relatively close

 

Or try one of these by the garden.


Follow the direction for placement. They attract decent pollinating bees, Mason and leafcutters. If they are by your area, it can be a little annoying, but they are very docile. And after a few seasons, there will be quite a few.

 

Man that’s a great idea. I’ve been contemplating a bee box but was afraid of having bees around the yard with the toddler. I think this may be a good alternative to not have so many bees, but maybe enough for the garden. Thanks for the idea

 

Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) planted from seedling vine about five years ago. They’re doing fantastic now! Hummingbirds love them.

 

Wisteria, Wisteria Frutescens “Amethyst Falls”, planted in ground about five years ago. Grown from seed in a pot for about 4 years (I know, I’m a glutton for punishment!) This is the most flowers they’ve had. This variety is not as aggressive as the Wisteria Sinensis types. Slowly training the vines to go over the gate arbor.

 

Finally the blackberries are done flowering! So many berries! Let’s see who gets to them first, me or the birds!

Zucchini season!

 

They will be around, but with the house you can "coordinate" where they are. I'm gonna guess next spring might be better to start, but maybe they'll move in now. Idk as they started building in a foot stool we have about 3-4 years ago. Started with one of those houses and now have two, along with the foot stool, which isn't good for our "toddler", aka dog. She chases anything that moves, and is allergic. Fortunately she has learned to leave the bees alone. I'd say just make sure you start to colonize away from little hands, because once they have a spot, they will return. Good luck, and hopefully it helps.
