Story Time with Gritto


I'm reliably informed by the old timers, that is, old timers compared to me...
... that there used to be many more Fox Squirrels around here.

They're bigger than Greys, so you can guess why.

I was deep into the woods once during small game season looking for grouse and shot one by mistake.
(I used to love me some squirrel pot pie).
I mean, I shot it legally, but if I'd known, I wouldn't have shot it.
That's how I discovered the first pocket of them I'd seen around here.

Shortly thereafter during the Buck season opener, I went back to the same area.
It was a drippy, foggy day and I sat on a log just listening.
I had no real intention of shooting a Buck, since I was so far from any logging road.
Just taking my rifle for a walk.

It gradually started to get light and I began hearing the sort of noises made by foraging squirrels.
After a while I could make out shapes at close range as the fog lifted.
First I saw a big black squirrel, then several grey squirrels... oh no, look at the size of them and their rusty red and buff bellies.
It's a whole colony of them!
I even saw a white one.
That was a little weird, to see a white squirrel at close range in the fog and dim light.
I could hardly believe what I was seeing.
I sat and watched them for a few hours.

Since that time about 30 years ago, I've discovered several pockets of Fox Squirrels deep in the forest.
I've kept the locations to myself.
I very much hope they prosper and come back

There's lots of fox squirrels around here, but I've only seen maybe 2 black squirrels ever.
