I’m just here to start the pot stirring. You guys can go ahead and think you’re smarter than the engineers and waste money on oil changes.

Nothing better to do, I hear yeah…

My oil changes cost less than $30 to do at home, but keep stirring :stirthepot:

My dealer's lead mech said 5K, and they put a window sticker reminder and are telling every customer the same (which I peeled off).
I asked my town's retired Toyota mech of 30 years what his OPINION was for the 24. He said 5K.
Anecdotal, yes, but 5K is what I'm doing at home....let the oil drain while testing out new reloads.

Wow, I think that's the cheapest OEM filter I've ever seen. Good job Toyota.

Very nice post. Makes me want to trade in my 2017 just to have a spin on oil filter!C4670B3B-0B96-4823-8DA5-3B32C0264D90.jpg C4670B3B-0B96-4823-8DA5-3B32C0264D90.jpg

I mean it cost me less than a uber eats order, plus its been proven multiple times with oil testing that there are break in periods with engines where the metals found in the oil decrease over time.

Not to mention Toyota recommends 10k because most people lease and that's what they offer on their Toyota care. Then the sucker stuck with the 30k vehicle with 2 oil changes gets a extended warranty from Toyota or has a possible time bomb.

Alright OP, instead of paying the dealer $109 for an oil change you've motivated me to put the Tacoma up on the Ramps-O-Death and give them yet another opportunity to kill me. See you guys later - or maybe not!

Teuton, the four bolts holding my felt skid plate on were 12mm not 13mm. You might want to add a note to the OP stating that some people may have 12mm bolts. Thanks again for posting this!

The engineers determined that modern oils can go 10k miles and get the vehicle through the warranty period. That doesn’t mean it’s the optimal interval for all oils in all driving conditions.

As multiple UOAs have shown, pushing into the 10k range can either be fine or can lead to increased wear/deposit build up rates, depending on my factors. There is no hard and fast rule here.

Shorter intervals have a lower chance of unintentionally walking up that wear/deposit curve, at the expense of potentially wasting some useful life of the oil. Since the fourth gen has a turbo, shortening intervals may be especially prudent to avoid cooked oil from forming deposits there.

If it were me, I’d be using HPL or Amsoil 0w/5w-30 at intervals established through UOA, starting at 5k miles.

You’re full of shit. Engineers said this engine could easily do 30k mile intervals but the bean counters had it set at 10k to make more money off dealership services.

30k mile oil change interval? Guess what's actually going to be full of shit, especially around 90k miles...

Exactly, you get it. Toyota knew that without a reasonable 10k mile service interval they'd have to let a bunch of competent 19yr old oil change techs go resulting in a life full of shit for those poor professional automotive workers.
