Is my transmission leaking?

I’m down here doing a drain and fill.
I touched it and it’s dry and powdery.

Its probably just starting to seep.....

 

I'd say more likely rear main seal vs the trans.

 

It's most likely the rear main seal seeping. How many miles? Have you changed your PCV valve? If you haven't, I'd start there. Clean it off and recheck in a few hundred miles.

No I haven’t, is that easy to replace?

should I bother changing my trans fluid right now?

do I need to replace both my pcv valve and rear main seal ?

It's pretty easy to do. It's on the driver valve cover. It can be a little tricky to get to, but easy to change.

I would still do the trans fluid like you planned.

I wouldn't worry about the rear main, until you change the PCV, clean the oil off the block, trans and old pan. And drive for a few hundred miles to see if it returns.

Which one of these is the right part number for the rear main seal? Did they update it and make a better seal?

90311-A0027 is what I come up with in the EPC.

I dunno, I've seen a slight rear main leak turn into lose all your oil in 40 seconds. Not saying that is going to happen, but the slight risk of losing a $10K engine is not worth the gamble.

This was on some old American iron, so I doubt this would actually happen on something modern. But, it's something I'd replace sooner than later. I'm gonna catch some flack for the comment, so be it.

I don't think there's anything else to really replace in that area.

 

ya I’m gonna replace the pvc first, see if that works.

but I’m still ordering the rear main seal just for backup.

 

My 4.0 has had that same size dark spot right there for years. Hasn't gotten any worse so I'm not doing anything about it

You understand, the trans or the motor has to come out to replace the rear main seal, correct? Unless it was leaking very badly, I wouldnt pull a motor for that seal. You are over thinking it. Ski
