Dealship quoting $700+ for sparkplug replacement

$800 for this job is robbery.

 

That’s why I did it myself. Took my time and just enjoyed the process and it was fine. Couple weeks from now it will be the diffs and than tc and than transmission and than all the fluids should be cleared out and fresh since I bought the truck used a few months ago and know nothing as far as maintenance on it.

I'd get a quote from an independent Toyota friendly shop, or do it myself.

I changed the plugs on my wife's Subaru, and people told me I had to lift the motor up past the frame to succeed. I invited some friends for mental support and advice and got it done. I literally pirouetted the coils out without moving the motor. the collective "HORRAY" was fun. I judge all spark plug changes to that event now...but no shame in farming out the work. taking a plug out of aluminum heads is not mentally healthy for me. hahaha..

my new 2023 truck looks like NO-FUN at all. and I did the last change on my 2006 already. I won't keep it past the next change.

 

We charge 2hrs labor for the 3rd gen. Sounds like good dealers are being reasonable with the labor time.

 

Aside from the video in post #15, are there any other tips and tricks you can recommend? I plan on doing this work myself soon as well

 

Don't over-do it on the thread anti-seize. Same for the dielectric compound: Sparce amount on the porcelain and inside the end of the boot (if at all): None on the top metal plug terminal.

FWIW: I don't use either one and I don't think they do it at the factory either.

 

If you got big hands it will be difficult. Very tight areas on driver side, small hand dudes have the advantage on this job.

Well I didn’t put any anti seize on mine but I did do the dielectric grease on the plug, and plug terminal and inside the boot. Hopefully I didn’t do too much.

 

$700? Wow. I will do these all day long for $400 a pop. Line on up.

I did mine without taking the manifold off and it can't have taken more than an hour.

Fun bonus was cylinder #3 (center on passenger side) was a little loose and the coil pack was discolored.

 

You should be ok. If you use high quality plugs, like OEM Denso or NGK, the nickle-plated threads on them serve the purpose as the anti-sieze. For dielectric grease, I just put a little on the porcelain part of the plug just below the top metal terminal and a little at the end of the plug boot.

 

just who comes up with time values for the book time fee's?

 

Toyota sets warranty time then 3rd party will add 20-30% as labour.

It's far from perfect.
