    Story time:

On Mondays I gotta go east of Raleigh to pick up pigs; they changed up the place so last week I went somewhere new. Same town just the other side of it..
Anyways on the drive in I saw this:
    IMG_20240610_090032.jpg
For those unfamiliar, these are tobacco plants.

My entire childhood summers were spent around these parts - and I remember miles and miles of tobacco fields as far as you could see.
I also remember seeing the field hands out picking the tobacco leaves. It is super labor intensive because you have to work a field for a few weeks. The leaves ripen from the bottom up, so you pick the bottom leaves, then come back in a few days and pick the next layer and so on and so on till you got the whole plant.

I rarely see tobacco fields these days...
Kinda miss it and now when I see em, it makes me super nostalgic - like it is some old school crop.

I like driving across sections of this state too - as you go east the incline/declines get gentler and you can see the soil becoming sandier and more saturated. Go all the way and hit beautiful quartz sand beaches.
When I come back towards home, you can see the trees change from mostly pine to more hardwoods. Go a bit past where I live and you start getting steeper inclines and more terrain till you reach the foothills and the mountains start to appear on the horizon.
All in a half day drive - pretty AF.

I used to eat the brown sugar ones growing up - as dessert! They are way too sweet for me these days.

There used to be tons of tobacco fields in western KY, not anymore. And the barns they stored the tobacco in were always black, I heard it had something to do with heat or sunlight. :notsure:
I wish I knew what fields grew Wintergreen Long Cut Grizzly. :anonymous:

We have a farm heritage park by my house and on the property is a tobacco dryin barn.
In fact I've seen a lot of them barns in my life - they aren't black around here tho - just have a specific roof shape

That wintergreen variety probably makes some pretty good smoking too ;) have to see if I can locate that field.

If I were to smoke cigarettes, it'd be Newport Lights - love the light minty flavor!!
