Ugh I’m struggling to remember. They were either 6” shortened to 4” or 4” shortened to 2”. Let me read my build thread again.

Anyone else ever experience a coil randomly act like it no longer wants to carry weight?

My drivers front started noticeably sagging last week.

pulled the C/O and adjusted. Sat perfect. Now today I’m noticing it’s sagging again.

I’ve personally never experienced something like this before but am feeling like it’s an early indication to a possible failure.

smashed this, broke that, covered it up with tape and paint
It may be failing and hiding it’s fatigue under the powdercoat
Might just be worth buying a new spring while you limp on that for another day or two

The eibachs on my rear dual rate setup are like that. But they have been on the truck for quite some time.

My line of thinking as well. Guess it’s a good reason to drop to 500’s like I had been considering.

First time for everything I suppose.

guessing you know this but if you drop to 500’s your “ big hit “ capability ie: whoops will suffer and you will have to add valving to compensate…so why drop to 500’s ? The kit is designed for a 600 on a dcsb

This is why. So I’m rolling with an 18x500. Realistically it will require 3/4” of preload to maintain the height I have now. Or I have the option to bring the front down some. I would much rather have to valve my coil over and bypass to dial it in than have zero control because it’s over sprung to begin with.

Also noticed. JD is listing kings with 500 and fox with 550.

I talked to Jesse when I ordered my kit and he recommended 500 for me even with all the additional weight and not planning secondaries. On my order "form" I just wrote I'll take whatever they recommend.
Still waiting on Fox to ship but I'm expecting 500x18 to show up.

hey this is totally unrelated to long travel in any way, but I know a few of you guys work full time in shops. I need to buy a new balancer and tire machine. Our old Coates aren't cutting it any more. Pretty much all we do are 33, 35 & 37" truck tires. Any suggestions? Looking at John Bean currently. Obviously the cheaper the better, but I want something quality.

Yup. One thing I’ve noticed with my truck with the 600’s is it takes a TON to put any heat in the shocks. To me that’s an indicator that the shocks aren’t doing much of the work and it’s mostly the springs. No matter how I swing with the valving I have a certain harshness in the front I can’t eliminate. I’ll bet money 500’s do the job!

I went from 650s to 550s for that reason and it helped a lot.

I believe it! Truthfully it’s a complete lie that you need to be over sprung to have bottom out control. All of that should always be done via shock tuning. It will always produce the better ride quality.

Total Chaos mid-travel front. JD Fab SUA rear.
I have 18x500# on my JD kit up front. Preload spacer is basically at the top cap and the front end sits a bit higher than I’d like. (Lower arms not level) Jesse recommended not going to a shorter coil for fear of coil bind and instead recommended 18x450#. Does this seem too light? I am 2wd and only a tube bumper in front.
Sorry if I should take this over to the JD thread but it seemed on topic here.

no front diff, no winch, no heavy bumper -- seems reasonable that your front end is just super light. no reason not to try a lighter spring weight that I can think of

It takes what it takes. If it seems like a lighter spring is needed, roll with it!

Coil springs are pretty easy to figure out with some simple math.

For ease we will us a 500x18

measure spring length at ride height. For practical purposes we will call it 14”

    18-14=4
    500x4=2,000

2000 is your spring pressure required to maintain current ride height.

Now say you want to go to a 450x18

    2000/450=4.44

So it will take approximately .44” more preload on the collar to obtain the same height you started with.

This method can be used for either going firmer or softer. Once you know what your spring pressure is you will be able to utilize that to choose a new spring.

I was basing that statement on 600’s being pretty standard spec across all LT kits for the past decade + and I could have sworn the JD kits were spec’d w/ 600’s originally ? mine was..600x18

Re: big hit capacity comment - I was assuming you were going to be under sprung if 600’s were in fact standard

I’ll ask Jesse about it tomorrow spending some time over there w/ J&D re planning / budgeting my next round of work …

My kit came with 16/650. I guess it must be fine cause my shocks get pretty damn hot after a good long run thru the whoops. I’m guessing you Canadian and almost Canadian (Michigan) boys just don’t have whooped out runs long enough to heat things up. :boink:
