I’m planning to run 255/80r17s on a 17” wheel. I currently have the stock OR wheels, so I’d need to purchase new wheels to do so. Looking into the different variations of the TRD pro wheels because they look awesome and are cheaper than running methods or equivalent. What width wheel would people recommend for skinnies in this size?

Will somewhat depend on the specific tire - check the manufacturer "approved rim width" for the model/size tire you're planning to buy. The "measured rim width" is usually the ideal width for that size but anything within the "approved rim width" range should be just fine.

TLDR: For the most part 7-7.5" will be best but chances are you'll have a hard time finding an aftermarket wheel this narrow and will most likely be forced to run an 8-8.5" wheel.

Think 7-8.5” is the recommended width.

don’t want to “stretch” this tire

Stock OR wheels are 16x7. You can run a 255/85R16 but will be limited to mostly MTs. T4R Pro 17x7 wheels fit perfect and will open you up to many more options in the 255/80R17.

Understood. The only tire I’ve entertained the idea of running is the wild peak at4w, but think I may run Toyo open country at3s if I go up to 17” wheels. Torn between the wild peak and toyos tho tbh. My reasoning may not be the most logical- if I run the toyos, they’re 5-6lbs light and an E rated tire. I’ve always been a fan of e rated even if some think they are a rougher ride and overkill.

For me it was all about price. I was able to get the AT4W way cheaper than the Toyo so decided to compromise on the weight and hope for the best. If the Toyo was cheaper I would have gone that route.

The E rating on the Toyo doesn't have any benefit other than load limit - so unless you're towing or hauling heavy loads it's probably just adding extra stiffness. The AT4W's are extremely beefy so there should be NO concern that they aren't as durable as an E rated tire. They're also very comfortable. I'm glad I moved from G003's to AT4W's.

this is good feedback to hear! Maybe I will just go at4ws to save money of purchasing new wheels. After all, I've already painted my stock OR wheels black. Only thing is that my wheels won't stick out as far as they would if I bought wheels with further offset. Although that could mean higher chance of rubbing.

I was stuck in that same predicament kinda. I tried G003's because I liked the idea of a skinny 33" but they just weren't the correct tire for me despite loving the size. I was headed toward moving to 17's due to the increased size options but was lagging because I couldn't find a single aftermarket wheel I liked that had suitable specs. Then Falken released the 255/85R16 AT4W and I bought a set immediately. They're super heavy but they were affordable and it allowed me to keep the wheels I have now which I like more than any 17's I'd seen on the market.

Another option is to get some wheel spacers. If I'm not mistaken, your wheels are 16x7 +25. Which means a 1.5" spacer would give you the same amount of poke as a 8" wheel with 0 offset which is one of the more common specs out there. A 1" spacer would give you basically the same spec as my 7.5" wide +10 offset TRD faux beadlocks.

I had AT3W's in 285/70 and now Toyo AT III's in 255/80 on my 4R. So far I prefer the Toyo's. Could have been bad luck but my set of AT3W's were SL and always getting flats. They also were hard to balance per the tire shop. Neither of those problems with the Toyo's so far, but not many miles on them yet, like 5k. They're also super quiet and comfortable.

Looks like Dick Cepek has discontinued production of the Extreme Country tires. I know alot of us here on TW including myself have been running the DCEC in 255/85/16. I need to replace my tires soon and have had no luck finding those tires in that size anywhere online, you can still find some of the other sizes however.

    Just a heads up.

My question is do you have to do a CMC or any other mod for the 255/85r16s to fit under the newest third Gen TRD OR?

I always recommend 255/85r16 or 255/80r17 for those planing to stay at 33”s.

I was debating on a TRD Lift but if I can fit 33s under my TACO without one I save myself some cash, being how I will gain 1.5" of ground clearance roughly.

Screw the trd lift. 5100’s all day with OME springs and headstrong AAL on the rear and you’re set.
