Frankly you should have left it in the street and called a wrecker to take it to the dealer. Nice picture with your phone would have helped too.

15k service on a 2016 per op's profile. Is that 15k mi total or after purchasing used? And if he was going for the next change, a hole in filter doesn't magically get bigger and spurt out the rest of the oil. It would've leaked out 5k mi ago. Something is getting lost in the translation and doesn't seem right.

This is on a 2023 per his post. The profile is probably not updated, not a very active user.

The only thing that would make sense is the housing is under stress from being torqued too tightly and finally cracked between the last time he drove and this time. Unless he is just assuming the housing is cracked and didn't examine it enough to find a different cause (o-ring in the wrong place, etc).

Not if it blew out the seal. I understand that seems to be an issue with the plastic stuff. It's also possible it never was tight enough. They were the last one's to touch it.

Good call; definitely missed the '23 part. Would be interesting to find out for sure because I don't remember hearing them exploding later. The overtorqued ones either leak right away or you can't get them off later and end up busting them.

so the seal doesn’t just blow out. 99.9% the time it’s either forgotten or is put in the wrong location.

This is why I'm considering a baxter setup.

Adding further complexity to the oil system, and having it hang even lower on the vehicle? The solution for mishandling the filter housing is to install it correctly.

I don't trust myself. I've had 2 of these for a while now, but haven't put them on.

And if you don't notice oil leaking of the canister, you'll probably also not notice it leaking out of all the extra hoses and fittings.

Baxter's basic kit just replaces the cartridge housing with a spin on filter housing. It hangs down a little further than OEM but is still above the crossmember and well above the skid plate. You'd have to absolutely destroy the skid to affect the spin on filter.

That's pretty slick. Know how much further it hangs down? Also which oil filter(s) work with it? Curious to measure this out to see if it would fit under my RCI Skid.

I believe it's about an inch further down than OEM + filter length. I don't recall where I got the info but that Wix 51085 has been working fine for me. There could possibly be a shorter filter that would also work but I haven't really looked around for one since this setup seems fine to me.

Curious to find out what happens. In my experience if the housing cracks or the seal is misplaced during installation it's going to leak immediately. Not months later the day before going back for another oil change.

But, if they were truly the last ones to touch the housing then it's on them 100%

If this is not a troll attempt by OP, there are a few possibilities.
O-ring can blow up months after the oil change.
I had first hand experience on my hybrid. Oil was changed in April, O-ring blew up in July.
Wife was driving and called me about the oil ligh.
She pulled over. I thought the engine was done. Still have the car, runs like champ.

Don't want to make this a "Baxter" topic - there are enough of those, but you are definitely incorrect on it adding complexity to the system. On the contrary - it really couldn't be simpler. No O-ring (oh wait 2 of them) no sticking the "pre-drainer" thingy in, no weird wrench, no fucking up which groove the O-ring goes in, no deciding do I need the aluminum housing or not. Just kidding - the OEM system is fine and anyone with even the slightest bit of mechanical aptitude should have no problem with it with a little attention to detail BUT I do love my Baxter!
