I am always curious about this Stranathan. Being in CO you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting one in a liquor store. Because I’ve been burned by so many young, thin Colorado bourbons, I haven’t bought one.

How do you like that one? One of my mentors back in the day bought it because of the branding and said he really liked it.

It's good, it's not as good as C923. I think that's the best one they've released in awhile, but they never disappoint. Going to have to hunt the B524 release and see how it compares.

Todays haul. Ran into a fella that didn’t like Remus, or the Old Elk sour mash reserve. Great deal. Decided to try out the Ezra cask strength just for fun.

Im gonna pick one up from the nearby liquor store, I think they had it for like $25. I'll post a pic so you can see what batch it is.

If it’s $25 it’s just Larceny small batch and not the barrel proof. The bottles are very similar.

While I do like some Old Elk offerings, Old Elk Sour Mash was unbearable. I believe it was batch 2. I love sour mash but it tasted like the smell of mold. I introduced it to my drain.
Found it, it was batch 4.

Yeah the BPs are usually about $60, regular larceny isn't bad for the price but it's not on the same level as the BPs

Didnt even know there was more than one larceny...whats the difference between a small batch and a barrel proof? I keep seeing those terms pop up.

Primarily proof. Small batch is 92. Barrel proof is typically in the 120’s. “Barrel proof” means bottled at the proof of the barrel whereas small batch is watered down to the lower target proof.

I recommend getting to know all the things that differentiate one bourbon from another:
    -Mash bill
    -Yeast
    -Age statement
-Warehouse / warehouse location (what part of the country it’s aged in and where in the warehouse)
-Finishing, such as the use of special staves, finishing in casks of a different type of alcohol, toasted casks, etc
-Bottling proof: low proof, Bottled in Bond, Barrel Proof / Full Proof / Cask Strength
-If a blend, what are the sources? If the bottler uses someone else’s distillate, whose?

I've got batch 5, which isn't bad at all. I've got the latest iteration of the Infiniti blend, which I hate to say...I don't like. It's just too oakey and doesn't have a flavor profile like their wheated offerings. I'll try this batch 1 to see how it scores.

My new thing with very dumpable whiskies....I keep em on the shelf, and play around with blending them with other bourbons, or finishes to see if I can make it save worthy. So far the only one I can't "fix", is 291 Rye. Sometimes a medium toast oak stave for 4-6 weeks saves it, or putting it together with something sweeter like WR, or Buffalo trace kinda brings it around. I've got a high proof Axe and Oak that is....not good. I've got a peach barrel whiskey I'm going to try blending it with to see if I can make it kinda sorta bearable..... I did Amburana stave the other day for 5 hours in Shine Shope Rhyes and Shine 120 proof, along with some WR...kinda mellowed it out. Not perfect...but better than it was.

It's good. If you like it and enjoy exploring the higher proof try the Barrel Proof next.
