I resisted buying it for a while because I was doubtful it would even fit since that whole area is so bent up on mine.

When I got it I was pretty impressed. It is a stout part. Didn’t bolt up easy but i just ran it down with an impact and it probably bent my stuff a lot closer to how it came from factory.

I still use 2 poly bushings and an oem rubber one for the c clamp because i used to break the poly ones apart in a couple hours.

I think a little flex in the bushings probably helps save the rack with how I drive compared to if they were delrin.

Interesting. I figured I’d do poly while everything was out. May weld a ubolt or something similar on the top or side of the stock c clamp while I’m at it. Might try the poly there at first and see if mine splits, too. My weld nuts broke taking it off so I haven’t studied that yet, but hopefully I can just slam a long nut and bolt back instead.

It’s interesting, the best mod for a Chevy rack replaces all bushings with aluminum with the idea that it’s now part of the steering cross member and doesn’t allow it to deflect. I guess it matters how strong the cross member / mounting points are so that may or may not work with 1st gens.

Anyone know what backspacing will work to clear 35x12.5” on 3rd gen 4Runners? I want just enough to clear the spindle etc. and keep the steering happy

I'm guessing somewhere around 3.5 - 285's are cutting it close with 4.5

Gotta say. Dropping down to 500lb springs made a huge difference. I doubled up my coil over valving a little in the process and it’s way way better.

Pretty sure, I will be entertaining 450’s soon though.

Pretty cool short film about Plaster City area

Kind of reminded me of being single and going out there on a whim exploring around the border back in the days.

17” 8.5 wide 0 offset I think they are 4.75 backspace is what I have.

Clears spindle fine. They are super close to upper uniball and rub the uca slightly when flexed and turned but I can only tell from paint rubbed up.

basically the same clearance on 35x12.5 pbr and 37x12.5 yoko, I would choose the same wheel specs if I bought again.

Do have tundra brakes, don’t know if the rotor mounting face is slightly thicker or not

When I bought my truck it had skinny 33’s on FJ steelies and I could tell 285’s weren’t going to work - maybe those had 5” backspacing

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I ran 4.75 BS wheels with 1 inch spacers to keep everything clear with 35x12.5

On a 1st gen Tacoma, which is essentially the same as what you've got.

Yea I kinda think backspacing is misleading for tire clearance compared to offset. But backspacing is important for wheel clearance on spindle etc.

they probably were +15 offset which is like 4.75ish backspacing for a 7.5 wide wheel. similar backspacing on a skinnier wheel puts the tire farther in but the wheel / spindle clearance would be basically the same.

also worth putting it out there people may want more backspace on stock width to keep it off the frame a little, but this is a long travel thread.
